Sorry to cross post but I fear I may of been missold green spotted puffers when I wanted dwarf puffers. I wondered maybe some experienced puffer keepers may be passing through here.

----------------------------------------------

Hi there,

I have an idea as to why my puffers are sick. Have a look at this pic. Is this a green spotted puffer? and if so isnt that a saltwater puffer? Being new to puffers this is too hard to tell for me, I appreciate these could just be dwarf puffers.

If it is a saltwater puffer, what emergency measures can I take remembering I dont keep salt water fish... all the salt I have in the house is seasalt :)

yes it is a spotted puffer. when they are young they can be kept in freshwater. what other fish have you got in there with it?

none other, it was a species setup. I used an existing established tank and relocated the inhabitants between my other tanks.

I've had to add some seasalt approx one teaspoon per gallon as a totally emergency measure you must understand to keep them alive till tomorrow (tuesday) at which point I'll offer them for free to my LFS. Last time I ever shop anywhere other than my LFS

I wanted indian dwarf puffers, they were sold to me as such, it was only while looking at pics that I got the suspicion of the problem..... they've not been doing too well all weekend I'm afraid. they are approx 1 - 1.5" in size, I think they need brackish water at this stage.

I'm so pissed..... anyone in my area, bear this in mind when tempted to shop at hollybush just off j11 of m6.

i use tonic salt in my tank, not seasalt . And only a small amount because my puffer is in a community tank.

I think the puffers must of had some salt in their tank as they looked so healthy.... even tho their tank was in the freshwater section.

Below is a post I made elsewhere regarding what happened.
-----------------------------------------

At this time I am so pissed with "hollybush garden and aquatic centre" here in Walsall.

I bought what I thought were dwarf puffers, I was told I was sold dwarf puffers, I happen to have a very good LFS so I instinctivley trusted hollybush when I bought my fish.

I'm mad at myself as at the time I bought 4 large puffers and two smaller ones which in hindsight the small ones (around 1/3 of an inch) were indeed puffers but must of been eaten by the GSPs that first night. I was concerned the smaller ones would be attacked but hollybush staff assured me they would not be..... however my instincts told me other wise but I trusted the advice I was given.

The remaining 4 larger fish (sizes 1 inch to 1.5 inch) are indeed juvenile GSPs NOT DPs. One has died but following the advice above the remaining three while not brilliant at least have white bellies again.

What really twists my mellon is that those gits at hollybush are selling GSPs as freshwater fish, not only that, they are selling them as dwarf puffers and to a newbies eye like mine they can be mistaken for indian dwarf puffers..... they had around 40 in the tank and now I know the majority of them are heading for a slow death as people mistakenly buy them.

From what I've read these young GSPs need at least 1 3rd the salinity of the adult GSP.... I'll do my best for them but I know after this abuse their chances could be slim.....

Its so sad.... after all the reading I'd done I just cant beleive I let this happen...... ####! If someone from hollybush reads this they may call it slander, I call it an account of the truth and I WILL defend what I say. I can only hope this is the result of just a few incompetent employees of hollybush.
