i have a male sunset molly (also known as 24 kart molly) and a red and black platty from what i have read they are both male but the sunset molly chases the red and black molly around like it wants to mate with it. Is there such thing as a gay fish or is there something else to this?

Most livebearers will mate with anything.

yes there is such a thing as gay fish. But if they are not actually doing the nasty he may be chasing them because he is competing with them for an imaginary female.

an imagonary female? they r 2 diffrent species will they mate? but i guess thats how u get a hybrid

My son has gay mollies in his tank. The black lyre tail was quite normal & would breed with a black & white female on a regular basis. Then my son got an orange & black sailfin & the female wasn't needed any more. When she died my son got another female for the tank & to date she has never been pregnant. Last week my sons girlfriend gave him a silver female (very pretty) but the boys just ignore her.

:fish: :fish: :fish: :fish: :fish:

Platys can also change sex  So you can have transexual fish as well!! Really! I had one months ago that did that but I can't remember which way it went - m or f.

i used to have gay birds! ... they did the do in there cage... and then the next day they were dead! it was as if they knew they were about to die and didnt want to die "un-done"
and my female mollies are lesbian!

so you can have gay animals all together!

that bird story is sad.

WOW i thought the human race was the only one messed up lol well thanks for the info i appreaitiate it

Not more of this ridiculous "gay fish" stuff. Someone show me some scientific proof of this and I'll believe it.... (And acetennis, I don't mean to imply YOU are ridiculous for asking, no question is a stupid question.)

Mollies, while generally peaceful community fish, can sometimes get a little testy and be a bit territorial. They don't do any real harm in the sense of what you'd typically think of when you think territorial aggressive fish, but they will chase and be a general pain in the behind to other fish sometimes. He could be doing this, or establishing that he's higher in the order of the tank. I've seen my mollies do this with other fish in the past. To put the "mating-like" behavior into perspective, you see dogs mount, fixed or not, both males and females do this (I have an alpha female, she mounts all the time). This has nothing to with sex, its a dominance display.

On the other hand, male common frogs will try to mate with other males or bits of wood or whatever while sexually excited during mating sessions, but do not otherwise spend their time in dominance displays, so it is quite likely that their behaviour is indeed sexual and not about domination.
I am not sure that we actually know in which category the behaviour of guppies fall. To me they seem more sexually inclined than territorial, but I suppose that is debatable. I think we may assume that their sexuality is very different from humans anyway.
Another thought, if we are going to anthropomorphosize (??) and compare fish behaviour to humans, perhaps it would be sensitive to keep away from negative value-laden words such as "messed-up"; a forum this size is very likely to have gay members, who might feel very alienated. Even I felt a bit taken aback simply because of the very good gay friends I have had. I am sure nobody meant to be offensive, but we need to be inclusive.
