Right, stupidly I tried to modify a CFG file with Wordpad. It didn't work so I reverted back to the original file.

However, now the game won't work at all (Thief). I have uninstalled and re-installed but still no joy.

I can only think that it is because Wordpad is automatically recognising the file type.

What can I do to stop Wordpad recognising CFG files?

i have no idea what a CFG file is but i know that if i want to open a picture in a diffrent program to what i should i can right click on the file itself and go to open with it usuually give you options of other suitable programs that open that file

Other than that you'll have to wait for a more experienced member to come along :D

From what I can gather, the file is text only and relates to certain game settings.

The problem is, I need it to revert to 'unrecognised program' under the 'opens with' tab.

I doubt that is the issue but here's where you can change it.

Open a window, go to 'tools' at the top of the window, then click on 'folder options' and then click on the 'file types' tab. You can change what program is associated with what file type in there.

Done that, cheers.

Still no luck though. Is there any way I can re-format my HDD and reinstall XP without a floppy drive?

I can't get my lappy to boot from CDROM even fiddling with BIOS boot settings :/

Have you tried looking up common 'Theif' problems? If not there should be an official forum for that game. Also if the game has been downloaded ie not paid for, then that is probably why it isn't working.

Can I ask what you were modifying in wordpad :D Also if you think the problem is because you opened it in wordpad, do the following
Right Click -> Open With -> Choose Program... -> Select 'Notepad' -> Tick the box 'Always use this program to open this kind of file' -> Click Ok

The game is a genuine copy.

I've done all those bits and pieces with no luck.

I think something may have slipped past AVG as MS Office doesn't work now, nor IE (so I can't even d/l anything from Microsoft - they don't support Firefox :grr:), and a few other programs.

Any idea how I can wipe the HDD?

I cannot boot from CDROM, it just won't work, and I don't have a floppy in order to use fdisk.

Wipeing the HDD is easy enough if you can boot from the Windows CD. Any ideas as to why it does not work? Is the Windows CD genuine? Is the CD drive internal or exturnal? What are you CMOS boot device priority settings?

Try a windows rollback before you wipe the HDD.

Start>All Programs>Accessories>System Tools>System Recovery.

Follow the on-screen prompts and choose a time when it was all working :good:

All the best

Have to say it, get a BIG magnet!

However, it will wreck the whole laptop. No OS, no software, no wireless, NOTHING.
