I came home yesterday to a bit of carnage in my boyfriends tank, two of his Platy’s (one adult female and one baby female) were missing eyes, they were fine in the morning cause I checked but by evening it had happened, think they were attacked by another fish. We got them out straight away and put them into the hospital tank with another Platy that had a severely bitten tail, but the adult one sadly passed away :rip: .

The little one is still alive at the moment and seems to be swimming around, I am treating the water with Melafix and Primafix and have added salt, is there anything else I can do or do you think it would be fairer to put her down? :-(

I'm not sure if there really is anything else you can do at the moment apart from give her some TLC and hope for the best! She will either pull through or not! As long as she is eating well and still looking happy then there is nothing to worry about ok the eye wont grow back but it doesnt mean that she wont have a good life without it! I once had a goldfish with one eye and he lived a good life! Try giving her some live foods which will be a nice treat for her and her fellow tank mate.

what else was in the tank???

It is a community 220 litre tank with the following fish:
1 x Common Sucker Loach
1 x Common Plec
1 x Red Tail Black Shark
1 x Pakistani Loach (Stripy).
5 x Adult Platy 3 babies
18 x Neon & Cardinal Tetra’s (not sure what ratio’s they don’t stay still long enough)
6 x Blue Tetra’s
3 x Cory’s

I think it was probably the Sucking loach but not sure

This sucker loach is it one of the chinese ones, I have three of them and I have just found out that they have a thing for other fish as they get older.... Mine were sold as golden weather loaches but like I say turns out to be the chinese sucker loach.

Yep its one of those Chinese ones, my bf didn't know when he got it 3 years ago what they could be like he has only found out since i started in the hobby and was reseaching like mad for fish for my tanks

Like I say I've only just found out today what they're like! How big is yours mine are still approx 3 inches I've only had them a month unfortunately had 3 as they were on offer (dumb I now know should have stuck with ottos).

Cant believe I thought my betta was upsetting the platy oh well I'm pretty lucky to still have a whole load of fry in a nursery tank! Can't wait to get rid of these loaches!

Maybe there should be a law about all LFS selling fish without giving warning that the fish can harm others!

Our's is about 3-4 inches and 3 or more years old. I think the problem comes when fish are sold under so many names ive seen at least 5 different shops with CAE's for sale and of course ever shop had them called something else and never CAE.

Sorry to hear about your Platy :rip: Hope you manage to swap your CAE's for something else.

I'll try and swap them for a couple more female platy's and maybe some ottos I'll just complain in the shop that they didnt warn me about the potential dangers if they refuse and ban the shop!

I dont want to do that but if it helps stop them selling fish that arent suitable for the community aquarium without notifying you when you say what more can you do?

I'm just pondering what to do with all my fry (have approx 50) My girls have been very busy and are pregers again

I know that feeling, i decided to let nature take its cause and let my females give birth in the main tank and if any fry survive they survive and if they dont they dont, i know it sounds hard (and it is) but otherwise i would of been over run, but it does work we both have babies in our tanks and it is lovely watching them grow

I find it really amuzing when another fish is after them (I know its harsh), more often than not the hunter goes hungry like my betta last night! Some fry are alot braver than others though!

I'm hopefully going to trade in my young fry when they are bigger which is why I'm raising them seperately and it also lets me choose any that I want for the future!

I can't believe how fast the little fry can go they are so much quicker when they are little! I had one get out of my breeding trap on Saturday at first I was confused how it had managed to be outside but then I watched as three more made an attempt for freedom by climbing the wall in a corner (they managed to keep a sheath of water round themselves not sure how but they did it)
