I have a very minimal amount of substrate covering the bottom of about one third at the most of the bottom of my tank but was thinking of getting 1 or 2 live plants if i can....

any ideas?

get a small piece of bogwood and tie on some java fern or anubias.

they attach their roots to the wood not the gravel.

will grow in a tank with no substrate at all as they get all their nutrients from the water.

i believe elodia is a floater that can grow roots. I think it will grow with no substrate.

thanks i'll have a read up about each plant thats been suggested and see what i can get from the lps's around here. Hopefully there will be something that suits me.

I got mine from a regular greenhouse. might want to check your lps (local plant store) instead. Mine were free and he is gonna give me some free lillies this week too.

To go with the elodia, any of the milfoil range will grow as floating plants. We have a few other plants in our tanks that do well as floaters as well. A fish may rip a chunk off a large one and it floats at the top and grows more roots/runners out in multiple places of the stem, after its well established like this we replant it and grows great, but even the ones we dont replant in my wifes tank (for her dwarf gourami), go great.
