As the title.... I have a 180 litre tank, a 150w heater ( turned fully up to 33 get things going )
dimensions are 100x50x40 6mm glass. Room temp is 13 degrees celcius, and tank temp I need to achieve is 26-28 degrees celcius. There's an external filter running that holds 3 litres I think? SunSun HW-302A 18w ( 1000L/ph ) like this

I'm wondering how long it might take? Reason being, I've had to take the 150w heater from the plastic box the fish are currently in to put that in the tank ( it's what came with the tank setup and has previously been fine ).
I've substituted the 150w in the box ( now in tank ) for a 50W from my Fluval Chi that has a pair of female guppies in.
It's a juggling act and one I stupidly or thoughtlessly didn't prepare for.
Doh! hindsight aye. I might have to keep the guppies warm by placing them in a small tub and putting that in a bain-marie type scenario in the kitchen washing up bowl filled with warm water and closely monitored.

Why don't you boil a few kettles and pour it in to heat it up quicker.

Hi, Nice bike. Got an SV650 myself.I use this http://jimsbeerkit.co.uk/calc.html there is a heating calculator on there.

Well generally 24 hours give or take a bit. But given that you've got the guppy's in a bain marie situation, why not remove some or most of the water from the tank and replace it with treated heated water as per Noahs suggestion ? So long as the water you put in is within a couple of degrees either side of the temperature you want, then there shouldn't be any problem. I assume that you have a thermometer?
Place that in your buckets and match your hot and cold water to mix to the right temp. Add to tank - sorted. It's what I do on water changes.

I'm going to be a bit of saddo now but generally speaking, you use the following
Energy required = mass x temperature increase x specific heat capacity of water
Therefore in your tank, energy required (joules) = 180kg x assume 10 degrees x 4.18

Joules = power (watts) / time (seconds)
Therefore a 10 degree increase in temp would take approx 7.52 MegaJoules of energy, which would take approx 14 hours, 83 minutes per degree increase
Sorry about that.

Just noticed you need a minimum 13 degree increase, so about 18 hours plus heat loss through the glass, about 20 hours in total

Lol, I was just trying to find that equation, remembered it from secondary school :)

This is excellent stuff :)

I've already treated the water and added the required amount of salt ( it's a brackish setup ) and I've added my last lot of Tetra Nitrate Minus ( currently have nitrate from tapwater through the roof readings.. you can find my thread elsewhere regarding that ) so if it's going to be a day I can live with that.

I've ended up just babysitting the guppies and removing and microwaving 4 litres their water 3 mins every 1hr 20 mins.
I've removed the filter and tinfoiled over their tank top and insulated the sides to keep a little heat in.
This puts their water around 25C dropping to 21C over the 1hr 20 min period. They seem ok with it.
The big tank is now at 20 degree's. ( it's 4.56am Wednesday ). Woo exciting stuff! :)
