The shop I returned it to wasn't the shop I bought it from and apparently their systems run on the same system? And that's why they tested the water. The shop I bought it from wouldn't take it back as I binned the recipet

The shop is making sure the fish are in good water (no ammonia or nitrite and a low nitrate). The shop doesn't want fish that have been put in or kept in tanks with high levels of ammonia or nitrite because it damages the fish, and the stress of moving the fish after it has been poisoned by ammonia or nitrite, could kill it.

The shop is just covering its butt so you don't return a sick or near dead fish.
Not surprising as they sold the fish to meet the bottom line why would its return be any different.
