I bought 2 female platies yesteday
1 is doing well as are all my other fish but 1 platie is hiding at the bottom of my tank. She has done a very stringy long poo and is not eating.
Advice please!
Thank you

Well, it could be stressed from the move, but stringy poo indicates internal parasites I would think. Not eating is also a very bad sign, my Platy never stops! I would either 1. Take her back to the petstore, and explain you want a new one, then possibly medicate the tank for internal parasites if you see the other one or any opther fish with symptoms. or 2. Keep her and try to medicate, with med food and capsules or tabs for parasites from the lfs. I say you just take it back, because I'm sure they will be happy to exchange it. Whats the update today?? Is she any better?

she has been like it all day - is it ok to keep her in the tank - is it highly contagious?

Well, I say just keep the lights off, and minimize stress as much as possible. If you have a quarantine tank she can fit in, I think it might be a good idea. I'l get you a few links about internal parsites, Ive had them twice, and if caught early, and the infected fish are removed, and the remaining treated, things go okay. I still say take it back just because I've gotten 2 fish with that from my lfs, infected my whole tank, and its no fun buying meds and stressing your fish with their harshness. If you do, make sure to get a fish out of a different tank, then the one you got it from, because they may be all infected too.

just been to check again and she is on the move (slowly) and pooing again- you dont think it could be a case of eating too much do you? Also my nitrite levels are around 0.5 and I have a bit of salt in the water - could this be part of the problem?

Salt....no, most Livebearers like salt in their water, although its not needed. You said she wasnt eating, but is she bloated? Would that make you think she ate too much lol..I would do a small water change, can I ask how many gallons is the tank, whose in there with her, and do you have any more test results?(Ammonia, NitrAte,pH,)Whats the temp as well?

she lives with:
4 mollies
2 guppies and
1 platy

Ammonia = 0
PH = 8
Temperature = 26

Just done another nitrite test is 2.0 on color card

24g tank

The tank is a new set up

Your nitrite seems really high....I know nothing of this really, except do a water change asap!! I know it should be zero. Do a 25-30% water change, and watch the fish carefully....Don't overfeed, or feed at all for a day or two maybe, it won't hurt the fish. This could be the problem right here...Tell me what happens after...

I know its a cycling tank though and I have changed the water this morning 25% and put in cycle, salt, de-chlorinated etc. I will do it every day until it comes down but apparently for a new tank set up nitrite levels do go up a bit - she is now just hiding behind one of my filter tubes but not on the ground level - about mid way. Really acting like a loner! Just keep an eye on her i think

is 10% twice a day better than 20% once a day?
Great news - they have made some sort of miraculous recovery! I have no idea why but they are swimming around happily like nothing happened! thank god! Cheers for all the advice!

Lol, prolly all those good water changes, I find they actually help a lot! I just had a little victory myself, my cory fully recovered! You should post some pictures once everythings all settled, that would be great.
