hi it would help alot if u can get sum bottom shots as thats the easiest way to tell how far gone she is,hope this helps

Due to the breeding of deformed fish to produce ballooned fish it's impossible to say when their close to giving birth.
All you can do is watch them, when you see fry then net them out to a fry tank.
If you only have livebearers in the tank, then you should be ok rearing them along side the adults.

Welcome to our forum Happily. Unfortunately, I must agree with HS on this issue. I can never tell when a "balloon" is ready for a drop. The deformities called balloon are not something that many of us are able to judge accurately. Instead they are the realm of "balloon" specialists which are few and far between.

Thanks everyone, I'll keep watching her. I've bought a breeder's net so I'll be ready if she's ready. :good:

Hello,

Does your breeders net have a vertical divider which forms two seperate chambers?? If so then I'd remove the divider and give her as much space as possible.

Good luck..

I would go farther than bodge on this subject. I would wait until I see the female dropping fry and place the fry in the breeder net. That way you do not stress the poor female too much and the fry that you spot would be protected.

Did by any chance your Molly give birth to fry?

I have the same issue right now. We just bought one and it looks exactly like yours. I am barely finishing raising some platty fry's and now new ones coming (I think). So please let me know if it DID give birth so I can expect them soon.

I am keeping an eye out for now. I would let the fish give birth in the main tank, then when I see the fry swimming get the survivors (not eaten ones) out and put them on the breeders nest. So we will see what happens and how many I get.

Thanks.

Hello.

OldMan47 is absolutely correct.. I personally let most of my females give birth in the tank and rely on the fry hiding in the floating plants/weed.

If you do it this way, you will probably lose a few to other hungry fish..

In my experience, most novice livebearer fishkeepers can get quite concerned about losses in this way. I know I was at the beginning.
I think it is a good learning curve to experience both methods. You can then stick with what method seems best for you. The secret seems to be in minimising the overall stress levels for a particular female.

One of my favourite females copes best when totally isolated from the other fish. I now use an isolation tank for her.

As always, your mileage will vary.

Good luck with the fry.

How do they create balloon mollies anyhow, what species are they breed from to create the distortion?

They're just normal mollies born with a genetic deformity that have been bred together to create the new form. It seems to be a fairly common mutation in fish, judging by the number of balloon varietys that are around now.

The fantail goldfish is the same (but with a mutation for a double tail added to the mix)

(When I say 'deformity', I mean a deviation form the normal body shape; I'm not making a moral judgement on the right or wrongs of the practice, though I don't like them myself)

Hi All,

I am happy to tell all you, my fish just gave birth today.
thanks for everyone's help and replies.

you can visit below link to see the picture I just took.

For now, I only see 6, only 3 fry moving..the rest 3 was not moving at all..(they did not make it?)

(FYI, by my observation..1 or 2 days before giving birth, you can tell the anal of mommy fish open a bit bigger than normanl..)

***** Can anyone tell me how to take care the baby fry? *********
they jumping in the bottom of the breeder box...sometimes even jumped over to the top..where Mommy is at...(will the mommy eat the fry?)

Thanks ^ ^

I bought a balloon molly a few days ago.
The guy at the fish shop said that although she was big- she wasn't pregnant "that's just what they look like"
I couldn't tell if she had a gravid spot as she has black spots all over her.

I've looked in my aquarium this morning and she is now half the size. And so I am assuming that she has had babies. I can't see any fry in the tank and so I am guessing that they have been eaten by other fish.

I'm gonna put this down to experience this time because now, I know what her unpregnant shape is and so will know when her stomach changes.

I have a black molly which I bought on the same day- she has a rounded stomach too and even though the fish guy told us that she wasn't pregnant either I'm not really trusting him after the other one. She has a quite swollen anal area.
I don't want the same to happen to her fry.
