Just been offered a load of live rock at a very cheap price

The guy says its been in a tank with no live stock in for months and lights and flow have been on as usual. Its got a load of hair algae on though apparently. should i avoid this or buy it as a bargain

cheers Simon

its £60 for 20 kilos!!

As said: hair algae in THEIR tank = hair algae in YOUR tank.

Under the right conditions, it may die off, but...................

id not but it expecting to use it right away. teh average going price for 20kilos is probably £100 out of someones tanik. Depends how much your willing to work for it!

I would buy it Simon, its a good price, just expect to have to put some work in + an emerald crab

but it wouldn;t harm the rock??
and would i need to do the job in salt water or under tap water?

Eeeekkkk - salt water Simon, wear rubber gloves as well, as you don't know what might come to see you  a nice little bristle worm for example :grr:

Anyways, let wait and see what the photo is like

You can try picking it off....maybe even a freshwater dip, but....if the hair algae grows, understand that you will fight this for a bit. SH

You have no livestock right? Couldn't you just pull out as much as you can then leave it in the tank in the dark? You would loose your coraline I suppose but that would grow back, I belive algae of all sorts need light to grow.
If it's the right price mate then you will just have to put up with a green forest :)

here's another thought after pulling loads out why not dump some cheato into your tank, it won't be pretty but it will soak up all the stuff hair algae needs to grow.
