put a tank directly on a stand? i have a new 4ft tank and have just bought a stand for it. I was wondering if it was ok to place the tank directly in the metal frame ( its one of the 2 tear metal stands.. 1 up 1 down) or should you place a piece of wood on the stand and then the tank on the wood ( obviosuly with some nice polystyrene or something between the wood and tank.

Its fine to put it straight onto the stand as long as the tank is glass.. only acrylic needs supporting evenly all the way across to prevent bowing.

As long as the tank will sit level and will not slip off of the stand you should be fine. Metal stands are very sturdy IME

Hi Sp00ky :)

I have 3 55 gallon tanks and they are all set right on the metal stands. I've never had any problems with this.

BTW, if your stand is the same as mine, it will hold a complete 30 gallon tank set up on the bottom shelf. :D

thanks guys, was just checking.... i have always slapped a length of wood on first, but hey, if theres no need then thats tank number 6 setup for tomorrow night !!

and yeah it is inch worm ;)

ANYONE GOT A 48 x 12 x XX tank hehehehe

Yep I got a 4'x1'x1' if you want it you can come and get it over my dead body. :p

I thought a styrafoam (unsure of spelling) sheeting was the sensible thing as it absorbs shock with glass or acrylic tanks? Please correct me if I'm wrong but I thought bare bottomed tanks were problematic? :(

and seanc, if glass isn't supported it won't bow but it might crack!!!! :hyper:  -_-

yes please can someone confirm this as im planning on mounting the tank on the stand tonight and filling it up !!

My theory with tanks is better safe than sorry especially as a sheet of foam should cost less than $10 (in australia anyways)

There's a risk of some small rock or thing under the tank, you fill it up CRACK - I've heard that a few times on these forums

Other things - it helps reduce vibration etc which on a steel stand is not absorbed.
- Helps to even out any uneveness on your stand - glass wont bend like acrylic it just cracks instead

Hope this helps some, these are the reasons I use foam on anything over 10gallons

Andrew
