Is It Just Me?

I hate it when people don't use punctation. It's hard to understand what they are trying to say. Spelling doesn't bother me being that I suck at spelling.

Another annoying thing is when people do this:

I called my sister last night...she wasn't home...her husband said she had gone to the store...to buy some milk.

I HATE THAT!

thing is, i think the older generations amongst us are gonna have to get used to it!

dont mean to be rude but its us young uns who do it mainly and well, were not goin newhere and were coming up with new abbreviations all the time.

were not doin it to be awkward tho!!

i txt my girl about 10-15 times a day and it gets tiring lol.

gotta shorten it somehow!

i dont seem to be able to put my point into text very well lol. hopefully u get what i mean.

Count your blessings instead of finding faults, excepts those that affect fish.
I think it is marvelous to think we all can communicate whatever we spell like and however our grammar is. We have never been able to speak to so many from all over the world. It is a blessing. Move on I left school years ago and hey you wee lads and lassies enjoy life its too short to worry about ps and qs. When you get older time goes by and you notice some folks waste life with trivial things like this obviously me included.

IMO.. text speak is just that.. TEXT speak - to be used while texting each other. You can't tell me that you're allowed to use it in school and I just refuse to believe that one day newspapers, magazines etc will be using text speak.

What Wolf said is very true.. there are lots of members using this forum who don't have english as their first language. I'm a crappy speller and think i missed those classes on proper grammar lol , but think we all need to at least TRY to use proper english to give everyone a fighting chance of understanding each other.

*gets off her soap box and returns to lurking*

~edited for bad spelling lol

Im definately guilty, i know my spelling is awful (i am the product of the US public school system), now knowing that it bothers people, i will definately try my best to clean up my posts. Im really used to chatting with friends over a computer game or on a casual note, its become a very bad habbit. My apologies :)

Typos and silly errors are to be expected really. If I note a typo or simple mistake in something I post, I edit it and correct it however.

It is the deliberate mispelling that irkes me. We do, as many of you have said, work on a multinational board, and for non English native speakers, a deliberate mispelling to "look cool" can be quite a puzzle. Most English natives spot it, and probably ignore the writer as an oaf, but foreigners may start trawling dictionaries to see what this is all about.

It is the epitome of rudeness.

I see your point LL, but this is an english based forum, and while there is some deviation within it in respect to culturally derived differing meanings to words and spellings, which are totally fine if you are aware of them but still a little bit confusing for those of us who aren't of the same groups. The forum itself is a mini-culture, and does this all the time as is expressed in this topic earlier.

From the other perspective, unless the person is clearly just being an "oaf", they may trying to make a point clearer and it just happens to change the spelling to make the meaning clearer I'm all for that. And instead of "trawling dictionaries" I'd encourage them to ask for clarification of meanings. That is a healthy discussion base, and good learning in general...

And native speakers of other tongues do exactly the same thing in reverse. Its just natural. We all spice our words with differing things to give it as specific a meaning as we can possibly express.

Either way I don't think its always meant to be rude, more ignorant or egocentrical (unaware)

I hope this isn't too confusing. lol

My spelling actually is terrible and I hate knowing I have spelt things wrong but the copying onto a word document takes ages with my computer (we have a speed problem which simply can't be explained it is a good computer with very little on it and my uncle, who knows everything about computer has tried and failed to find the problem) luckily we have broadband or I wouldn't get anywhere. I have tried some of the suggested programs but failed to get them to work.

I very rarly use abbreviations like 'h8'. However I tend to use 'temp' for temperature and things like that.

I can't appoligise enough for my bad spelling and punctuation (usually plenty there just in the wrong places).

Anyone fancy telling me how many mistakes are in this post. Anyone want a word with my english teacher.

EDIT: noticed some spelling mistakes

Shrimply.. we ALL make typos and shorten words in here. (egs: lfs, UGF, aro etc etc) That's not the problem. I think the bigger complaint is about those who insist on using text speak just because they think it's cool and expect everyone else to just 'get used to it'

I am doing my best to write correctly. We all do typos. I don't like the oh lets just use the text speech idea (it's hard to get used to). When thinking about my mistakes in spelling please keep in mind that I am 13 and I come from Slovenia (most people here don't know as much enlish even when older).

Once upon a time in a far off land lived a man named Samuel Johnson. One day he had a marvellous idea.He would write all the words and all the meanings of words in a big book and call it a dictionary. When he did this the people were amazed. For hundreds of years whenever people wanted to know the spelling or meaning of a word they looked it up in this book.
However along came wicked scientists and invented the internet and mobile phones.People soon forgot how to spell and the poor little dictionary was left unread and unused in the corner.People would say they were bad at spelling or that there wasnt a computer programme available to help them spell.
One day a little old man called Weaver told the people about the dictionary. At first they scoffed or didnt believe him.Why aint I eard of it b4 now m8 they saidThen someone actually saw the dictionary and the next time they could not spell a word they looked it up in the book.
Lo and behold!There it was!
Soon word got around and everbody started using the dictionary again.Soon all the people could spell correctly and they all lived happily everafter
The End
