i went to look around at the lfs today to stock my new 125. i want an oscar and the smallest they had was about 3 inches, i also was going to get a texas cichlid but the biggest they had was about 1.5-2 inches. looking at them the difference is drastic. would it be a bad thing to put the two of them in a 125 due to the size difference.

Right now, it probably won't be a problem. Although the Oscar will grow much faster than the Texas Cichlid. Down the road the Oscar will become the dominant fish and either terrorize the Texas or the Texas will accept his inferior position and stay hidden all the time. Many years ago I had pretty much that exact same situation (but with several Os, 1 Tx and 1 JD).

I've read that Central Am Cichlids tend to be more aggressive than S Am. The above mentioned was the only experience I've had with Texas Cichlids and it proved very different than what I've read, so I may have had a rare situation. Even if this is so, it sounds like you have a very very similar situation.

It should be fine. I have a 3" texas with a 6" oscar and they get along fine. And thats in a 120 gallon.
