I have not seen this fish anywhere since I purchased it a few years ago, not even in any fish books.

I was told it was a type of tetra by the pet shop employee. He has grown much larger than any tetras I've seen and is about 3" in body plus the tail. It has a cool batman cape like dorsal fin, which I have never seen before, and dark blackish/bluish marks on the sides and is very active in the tank. It will play with the two large loaches chasing them around but leaves the three large angels and other fish alone. Doesn't seem to be a fin nipper. I would love to know what it is and any information about it. Anyone seen this one before? Thanks for your help. BVG

Barbus arulius.

If you google that name and search images, you'll find a load. What is interesting is the fish we have called Barbus arulius for decades may not, in fact be so! There is another fish, Barbus tambraparni, which some now suspect is what we've been seeing and that B. arulius is a seldom imported second species. Don't know for sure yet, not enough evidence.
