Is Algae Good Or Bad

hi my 3 foot cichlid tank gets a bit of sun and noticed that green algae is starting to grow on the rocks is this bad will it affect the water condition positively or negatively? thanx

Negatively. I'd try to avoid all aspects of algae. If when you say rocks you mean not gravel than take them out a brush the algae off of them.

surely it wont affect the water conditions negatively
algae will do the opposite, it will "help" in the same way any other plant does!

unless of course its BGA!

it is usually just for aesthetic reasons algae is unwanted in a tank, altho in my old tank the green bushy type algae that grew on the rocks i quite liked!
so did the plec and the SAE...............

Algae is actually important in a cichlid tank as they are algae grazers, without algae in their diet they arent as healthy.

Like baron says, nothing wrong with it, just unsightly in some cases. I used to have a cichlid tank and i let algae grow & cover all my rocks, it was an amazing effect, the stones lookes realy aged, as seen here:

I have BBA algae on my bogwood, and also a thin coating of some other algae on my ornaments, and IMO it makes teh whole tank 'blend' together much better than the 'starkness' the bogwood and ornametns had when they were brand new.

it only grows on the rocks not on the gravel...
one question it not about plants but about gravel is sand better to use in a tank if i am keeping kribensis rather thabn gravel?
