the hd video on the d500 does have af but the reviews say its quite noisy . as for getting the best i can afford i was originally going to spend 250 then it went upt to 350 then 450 and now £499 lol i gotta draw the line there. this is pretty much the best i can afford at the moment . a good macro lens will be the next investment . i have seen a really good canon 1 but i think it was about £600 !!! im only going to add lenses to my collection when at times i can afford to spend the money to get the quality. but for now i think the d500 kit will be a nice starting point .
Stretch you budget to the limit! It is an investment and once the photos are printed, you'll know that whatever you have spent was well worth it.
When you get a macro lens make sure it's a proper 1:1 macro. If you are serious about photography, then maybe consider getting a body and a Canon 50mm prime lens instead. No zoom but the quality is way better than the standard kit zoom lens. Then you can learn about aperture and depth of field etc, also the luxury of a f1.8 aperture.
