Is A Usm Lens Still Auto Focus?

the hd video on the d500 does have af but the reviews say its quite noisy . as for getting the best i can afford i was originally going to spend 250 then it went upt to 350 then 450 and now £499 lol i gotta draw the line there. this is pretty much the best i can afford at the moment . a good macro lens will be the next investment . i have seen a really good canon 1 but i think it was about £600 !!! im only going to add lenses to my collection when at times i can afford to spend the money to get the quality. but for now i think the d500 kit will be a nice starting point .

Stretch you budget to the limit! It is an investment and once the photos are printed, you'll know that whatever you have spent was well worth it.

When you get a macro lens make sure it's a proper 1:1 macro. If you are serious about photography, then maybe consider getting a body and a Canon 50mm prime lens instead. No zoom but the quality is way better than the standard kit zoom lens. Then you can learn about aperture and depth of field etc, also the luxury of a f1.8 aperture.

I've recently bought a tamron 90mm macro, which is a great lens.

I would really like a lens that could focus even closer. I think I should get a microscope lol.

cheers :good:

for now the main thing i want is to take decent shots of my fish , and general photography when im out and about . i can as i said always get more lenses as and when i can. but that wont be for quite a while yet , so for now i kind of need a good "all round" lens . and looking at prices a 500d ( which i kinda got my heart set on now) body only . would not leave enough in the budget for a seperate lens.

The problem is that "good" and "all round" usually cannot be used together to describe a lens, certainly when you get a bit more advanced. If you are really stretching then just get the kit (body + lens) and start shooting. Mind you even with a dSLR you would still struggle to photograph your fishes without using flash or higher ISO. Using higher ISO with an dSLR obviously yields better result than a point and shoot, but you would be even better off with a full frame dSLR! Macro is not always necessary, as using macro you are focusing very closely, require a larger aperture to get enough depth of field, which in turn means slower shutter speed or higher ISO...

...just buy one and start shooting!

for now the 500d kit will be more than enough to keep me happy . in fact im just leaving for the shop once ive had a shower :good:

you should be able to get an "extension tube" to fit that lens. to be honest any EF extension tube would do. however you do loose a lot of light. its even easier if you can use a camera manually. a simple reversing ring will make a 50mm standard into a macro!

got the camera this morning its all charged etc amd im playing with it . and i have to say i love it . now all i need is to build up a nice collection of lenses
