Iridsecent Shark With White Film... Not Looking Good! :/

You can disinfect by washing with bleach. If you aren't planning on putting fish in for a while, you don't have to use the 10:1 water/bleach solution. You can go higher than that and just rinse really well with clean water after. You can also use white vinegar.

A better option that household bleach is a baby bleach for disinfecting baby bottles, and rinse, rinse, rinse.

As for putting him to sleep. I use clove oil.

Take an old ice cream tub or other small container, put some tank water in and the fish. Get a jam jar and add a small amount of tank water to the jar then a few drops of the clove oil, put the lid on and shake the jar so the water turns a milky colour. Then gently pour the contents of the jam jar into the tub and cover if you do not want to watch. It only takes a few seconds for the fish to go unconscious, then he will stop breathing.

Just wanted to add, 30 drops per litre is the lethal dose. And do use containers you won't want to use again for anything else, as the smell of clove oil lingers for ages.

Thank you all for your help and guidance.  He passed on his own last night.  :(  I visited the LFS today and they didn't have any in stock.  I told them about him (and Quint) and the cashier reluctantly told me that since their entire tank had died, the owner wasn't planning on getting any more iridescents in.  I saved the lecture on tank size, etc, as she wasn't the one in charge of any of it and they didn't seem to have any plans for carrying them in the future anyway.  *sigh*  I just hope his last days with us were better than they would have been in that bowl.  *sniffle*

No need to be so offensive Star4. Think we all know it isn't a good idea to put fish like this in a tank like this, though thoughts for a bigger tank / pond in the long run as stated.

I never said anything about ChiefBrody's not doing his best and neither about his attempt to help this fish, but still think these fish (though small) shouldn't be kept in tanks like this.

I even think it is one of the most common reasons for healthproblems with all kinds of fish.

" Keeping my goldfish in a bowl shouldn't be a problem, cause he is so small" results in the importt of 10.000.000 new goldfish in Holland every year (In other words : 10.000.000 die every year in these tiny bowls). A real shame !!!

Soooo I don't think Chiefbrody is to blame, but this might be one of the reasons for this problem !!!

Cheers Aad
When posting I saw your last post Chefbrody. Sorry to hear !!!!

Sorry guys, but in my opinion even a 30 gallon is farrrrrrrrrr to small for there Giants (to be) Or am I wrong.

I am sorry you felt offended, but you did ask the question were you wrong!, and in this case you were. Not everyone goes out buying large fish to stick in a small tank. Reading chiefbrody's posts he already stated a tropical pond was planned. Some people are lucky enough to be able to build large ponds etc to house monster fish.

Now because you have got upset you are having a go at me because I supported chiefbrody's actions IN THIS CASE and no I do, not support goldfish being kept in bowls at all. People do use grow out tanks.

Funny you got offended by my post and not eaglesaquarium.

Chiefbrody, I am sorry you lost him, by the sounds of it with all of them in the shop dying also you didnt stand a chance of saving him, but at least you tried.

I haven't got upset (there are more important issues in the world going on I think) and not having a go at you cause you're supporting Chiefbrodys action.

Think Eaglesaquarium and you were right I didn't read the entire thread (correctly) and that it wasn't the advise Chiefbrody was asking for.

The discussion about keeping these fish  should be held elsewhere I think.

Apologise fot that.

If you read post 3, the fish is only 1 1/2" at the moment and was put in a 4g cycled holding tank (thought to be cycled)  WHILE the 30g tank is cycling (post 6)  and it is a grow out tank and the OP is planning a tropical pond for the fish. The fish was in a small bowl when the op bought it (see post 6) and the op is doing their best for the fish. It is bad luck that the 4g tank started having problems, nothing to do with a 1 1/2" fish.

Please refrain from jumping on the band wagon of complaining that the tank is too small for a 1 1/2" fish when the op is actually doing the right thing by the fish, by trying to save it! The OP has NOT put a 3ft fish in a 30g tank and is not planning on keeping a 3ft fish in a 30g tank.

I didnt actually highlight you DD in my original post, it was the fact you posted first about the size of these fish followed immediately by sawickib.   I stepped in highlighting the facts that had been missed from the OP, to try stop others joining in skimming through the thread and only reading "oh someone is keeping a big fish in a small tank, lets have a go". Quite frankly I didnt want to have to trawl through repeated posts about the size of the fish and tank until I got to what was happening so I could try and help the op and the fish. Hence I attempted to put a stop to it without having to ask a moderator to step in. It is not the first time I have seen this happen, I have lost count of how many times this happens in the years I have been posting on this forum, and it certainly will not be the last.

My first questions to the op were about the size of the fish and did they know how big they got. I did not see the picture when I first answered, which if I had of seen it, there would of been no need for me ask how big the fish was at the moment, because from the picture it is obvious that it is a juvenile and even with the picture present.....  lets have a go about the size of the tank post appeared. Which is not practical help.

I am sorry a mere member pointed out to which you took offence to my post being directed at you (which is was not), but eaglesaquariums more delecate way of putting it didnt.

Wishing to turn the conversation round now into the ethics of keeping large fish, then do start a thread about it and I will happily stand by your side and support you about the horrors of fish being kept in the wrong conditions.

I hope that we can move on now.  :D
