Just as an FYI, even though too late is this:
Iridovirus in Gouramis
Alabama Cooperative Extension System
http://www.aces.edu/dept/fisheries/education/ras/publications/Update/Iridovirus%20in%20gouramis.pdf

An iridovirus was found in spleen and intestinal tissue of gouramis from the genus Trichogaster that were dying with signs of systemic disease. Mortality rates of affected fish have varied from low (0.5--10%) to moderate (50%) with death usually occurring 24--48 hours after the onset of signs. Clinical signs associated with the presence of the iridovirus have included darkening of body coloration and lethargy. Sick gouramis often stop eating and the abdomen may be distended. Internally, an enlarged spleen has been the most notable abnormality. The intestine may be reddened, and a clear amber fluid may be present in the body cavity.

It is an easy to read but a bit old- its from 1996. There are other more recent studies available if one is curious. Go to Google Scholar here http://scholar.google.com/ and then type in "Iridovirus in Gouramis"

Sorry about the loss of your fish.

Wow, from reading that I think I was actually right thinking it was iridovirus. .. and my lfs just assumed it was dropsy. Very informative. Seriously thank you. I'm convinced it was that. All the symptoms are exact.
