Hi, I've just joined this forum and I thought I'd make a quick introduction.

I'm 24 and from Dublin (Ireland), and I just got my first tropical fish this week. I cycled the tank with 3 goldfish (on the advice of the petshop, before I knew better) and one unfortunately didn't make it, but the other two are now living happily in their own little tank, and I bought Stratocaster, a plec, last Tuesday. Yesterday I added 3 Mollies and 6 Cardinals and they seem to be settling in nicely. (They haven't got names yet, I have to get the hang of telling them apart first! :D )

I do have one question (and I'm sure there will be plenty more in the future) - when I feed them, one or two of the Mollies start racing around annoying the others, nipping at them and doing what looks like headbutting  It only happens for around 10 minutes just after I feed them, I was wondering if I should be doing something to try and stop them, or is this normal?

(I've just got broadband as well, so with any luck I'll be around a fair bit, I look forward to getting to know everyone :fun: )

:hi: to the forum!!!
Unfortunately I have little experience with mollies....so I can't help you there.
However, as you will notice....there are over 2700 members and one or 500 WILL be able to help you!!! Although it just sounds like a quirky fish game to me!!! No harm intended! Good luck and once again :hi:

hey there Amanita! I too dont know much about mollies, but i have 4 zebra danios and one does the same thing as you described to my other danios and guppies(not only at feeding time). My other zebra danios don't bother my guppies at all so maybe its just the personality/attitude of some fish or the fact that my zebra is a male and the rest are males too (just less dominant). Unfortunately i haven't found a way to cure it , but there hasn't been any damage to my fish so im not worrying. Try putting food on other sides of your tank. I find it solves alot of problems between my faster bigger fish and slower tiny fish. Sorry i can't give you anything more then that. Good luck!

my mollies do this occasionally, well, the alpha male and female do. these fish DO have a hierarchy, like pack animals do. the top fish eat first, the others get what they can. its normal, don't worry too much.

hey amanita,
am new too from kinsale (thats in cork to you dubs!) 27 and finding out everything irish fish shops don't tell you. i am facing prospect of dying fish as i put fish in straight away. praise the lord though that they are all surviving after 4 weeks. But ifind myself staring at them expecting one to pop off at any moment. i have four tetras (two up the pole already or just extremely FAT) 1 guppy, two bronze catfish (i love them as i used to work in eastern europe growing their big daddys commercially) and two orange / beige yellow things that i have not identified but they fight all the time. next mission on this fantastic site that im new to too is to find out what they are! Good luck on your tank. being totally ignorant but arn't goldfish cold water?
