Hi all I'm relatively new thought I'd do the intro thread so my name is Nick and I have probably about 11 fish tanks with everything from Siamese fighting fish angel fish and cihlids all the way through to oscars barramundi and albino asian redtail catfish I'm always doing tanks you wouldn't have imagined ever working and some are still going to this day like my tank with oscars, sleepy cods, plecos big and small, a blue texas and some little gouramis (believe they were opaline gouramis one gold and one blue)also have 2 giant gouramis living together who have been together about 6-7 years just as long as the oscar tank has survived

Super cool! Could you share pictures of the tanks? Welcome to the forum!

Yep these are a few that I have set up in the last 2-3 weeks and yes they will be getting much bigger tank very soon however the other tanks are at a different house so will have to get pics of them another time if I don't already have some
1st 4 photos is the tank with the barra, silver shark, neon blue Cray and the cichlids which are hard to believe are a cross between blue texas and braziliensis cichlids which I accidentally x bred and now the babies are having babies so I guess they're not infertile
The other photos are of the baby cichlids crossed between blue zebs and dragon blood cichlids (another accidental x breed also got babies from them babies which i sold all but one as a bundle)and a few other types some will stay together in a bigger tank other will be put in other tanks eg the black shark and the golden ghost knife fish

Wow! Super cool fish you have! If you mind me asking, why do you keep the water level low like that?

What is that fish in the 2nd photo? Looks snake like. I can see that you love the more uncommon fish...

Haha yes love the uncommon/weird ones and that would be the spotted spiny eel I'd say or others sometimes call them a peacock eel
I have looked into those before when I was curious about eel keeping... I love unusual/rare fish amd I have just recently started proper aquarium keeping.... So maybe in the future I will get to keep a larger tank with larger and more unusual fish... I keep peacock gudgeons which are an uncommon species that I loved when I first saw it online.

Thats actually a good idea for the bacteria... I have never thought about that...

What species of turtle do you keep?
Yeah i just didn't wanna drive any more cycled water over as already did two trips with 9x30 litre buckets however I did top them up just after the photos 😁
I believe we bought the little fellas as Murray/Macquarie river turtles.
And yeah from memory the peacock eels don't grow too large either there are lots of smaller exotic fish that you don't need a huge tank for just have to search I also kept peacock gudgeons a while back they are pretty cool with their huge mouths and surprisingly aggressive sometimes I kept mine with a bunch of Aussie natives (also love the Aussie natives even though they aren't usually as colourful as others they're awesome however they are usually predators

Had some cichlids that were causing trouble everywhere I put them nobody could handle them sold heaps of them and all the ones my mates bought came back to me🤣😅
Finally I decided they needed some more aggressive tank mates to keep them in their place so I put them with my barra (kinda silly but his named falcon 4ltr after my car which runs a 4 litre barra motor😁😁) and the silver shark I haven't named yet and the little turds decided to thrive and even have eggs haha they run circles around the tank every now and then when they get into it but the little fellas keep up if not a little faster

Pretty cool turtles, I googled em real quick...

Yeah peacock eels only get to 12 inches and need a 40g, I believe. I agree that there are a bunch of smaller exotic fish out there... I'm not a huge fan of the super large fish but I think someday it would be cool to maybe keep a larger catfish or pleco. As I get older and I'm able to have a larger tank I think I would love to start keeping bichirs as well... They are just so prehistoric looking.

I used to have 3 peacock gudgeons but that lasted about two days after I got them... One sadly died due to stress and now my 2 gudgeons rule the tank... One looks like a male and the other looks like a female. I rushed getting another one and about a week after having them I got another... Well, that one got body slammed as it was acclimating to his environment by my male... Apparently they like being the only two gudgeons in the tank...

Haha yeah mine were pretty similar had to put them with other fish also I love the big fish I have my baby barramundi which i posted pics already and i have a baby albino asian redtail and my 2 giant gouramis one is about 7 years old and the other is only about 3 but I grew him from a baby so he caught up pretty quick as started from about a 4cm little "goldfish" and now he is almost bigger than that 7 year old just needs to fill out etc I reckon another year and he will start getting bigger(hopefully no dominance issues) I'll post pics etc

Super cool! Its insane how a tiny fish can grow and grow into a massive "monster"
