Internal Juwel Filter

Has anyone ever ripped out their internal Juwel filter and heater box? I was thinking of replacing it all with an exteral filter & 2 lower wattage heaters. Does the black box come away easy? Id be doing this with the fish IN the tank, but will probably leave it if its a big deal!

I feel that if you did it wile the tank was full you would put too much stress on the glass, with the pressure of the water already on it.
