internal filters?

can you keep gouramis in a tank with an internal filter? Because I read somewhere else that you couldn't, but I was hoping to get one, and I'd really like to know whether i should or not!

I had my male blue gourami in a 5 gallon tank with a Whisper 2-5 internal and he did fine.
