Hi guys,
I’m looking for an internal filter for my 80 litres tank.
Ideally I would like a filter with enough room to add biological media,I don’t really want one of those classic little filters with a sponge and that’s it because ideally I would like it to cover all the 3 filtration stages.
Do you have any suggestion ? Does it even exist or am I asking too much from an internal filter?
Thank you in advance

Filters should be geared to the fish being kept in the tank, as (primarily) water flow directly impacts the fish. There is no need for chemical filtration unless one has to adjust the water chemistry for some specific reason; you will find most members do not use chemical filtration (carbon, or other media) generally speaking. Mechanical filtration is well achieved with sponge/foam, which is why a simple sponge filter can be more than sufficient, again depending upon the intended fish. Biological filtration obviously occurs no matter what the filter is, as bacteria will colonize any and all filter media, substrate, etc. Live plants, esp fast growers like floating, impact this too.

Subject to knowing more about the intended fish, if some current is needed, then one of the internal filters like the Aqueon Quiet Flow series are ideal. If the fish are quiet water species, a simple sponge will be good.

Have a look at the seachem range or fluval range. You can use the use sponge or biological - the choice is yours.

Thank you so much Byron this is very helpful to know.
I’m not 100% sure which fish species I’m going to keep,I think I will go for for a small tropical community,I thought I needed to add bio medias in my filter to achieve an effective biological filtration but you answered my question perfectly.Thank you !

Your space in this tank is very limited so the fish will obviously be small, such as the "nano" species of tetra, rasbora, etc, and none of these will want strong currents, and live plants especially floating will be advisable as well...so a simple sponge filter (connected to an air pump) is one option, but the smallest internal Aqueon Silent Flow is another option though it would not be mine (still an issue with water currents).

Look at Eheim Biopower 160. That has 3 baskets. The lowest has a sponge, the middle is substrat pro (a sintered glass medium) and the smaller top basket has another sponge or it can be filled with filter wool (floss). The flow rate can be adjusted as well.
