I had a Betta in a beautiful vase with Lucky Bamboo for some time. I never saw the need to cover the tank though until the one day I returned home from work to find my Male Betta laying in the middle of the livingroom on the carpet. What's worse was I had just let my ferrets out to play and like a bloodhound it ran straight to the beta. I quickly fetched the poor creature up from the ground thinking it to be dead sadly and turned to start the process of properly disposing it. The thing was dry as a bone and had carpet lint stuck all over it. If I had to guess it had been out for some time (over an hour). All of a sudden the thing started to flop right in my hand. I almost had a heart attack!!! I quickly sprinted across the livingroom and plunked it back into the vase. The damn thing started swimming!!! To this day I can't believe it. I know that they breath from the top sometimes to gain more oxygen but c'mon, how can it survive so long out of water. Has this happened to anyone else or have any of you ever heard of such a thing? Just curious...

I had a female bail on me some time ago, I'm not sure how long she was out but she was also dried crisp, I put her back in her bowl and swished her around and she went into convulsions but still had some life in her, sadly she didn't make it through the night but still, it is very interesting isn't it? Glad your little tough guy survived :D

Hi! That just happened to me but with a goldfish. My cat knocked the bowl over in the middle of the night, I have no idea how long he was out of water for. Picked him up and thought for sure he was dead. He wasn't wet at all and started wiggling in my hand. So I ran and filled up his bowl with tap water no conditioners ( I was in a hurry) LOL. He's fine, I call him super fish now :D He just started swimming around like nothing happened . I fed him , he pigged out. I don't know what happened but have of his back fin is gone, I'm thinking maybe my cat had some fun with him. Poor thing but amazing! What little troopers they are!! Now of course I put him away at night.

Yes! That has happened to me, also with a goldfish. I had just bought a Wal Mart feeder fish thing. You know, not supposed to live very long at all. Well I was carrying him up the street to show my friend. (I was about 6 or 7). And all of a sudden I dropped his bowl and it shattered. He landed on the hot asphault and I picked him up and ran him home. We also put him in tap water and put in the dechlorinator, swished it around and my mom went to the store with me to get a nice new 5 gallon tank with a filter and the works. We also got a friend for him. We got back and he was laying on the floor! Thank god the cat was outside. We put him back IN the bowl, got his tank ready and he was in a bit of shock. He pulled through though!

A few months later both goldfish were swimming around happily and my brother decided he was gonna feed them flour. He dumped a few cups in there and I was screaming. My mom came to the rescue again and pulled them out with her hands as she saw them swim by the tank sides. (the water was too clouded to see) Again they pulled through after the mess was cleaned up.

Boy, they were sturdy little guys. They lived for about 4 years! Then we got hermit crabs instead of more fish.

 I'm amazed!

So was I when I got older. My mom took care of those fish religiously.

Goldfish and Bettas can live in toilet water if they had to

When I was really young my parents had a tank for goldfish. It was ten gallons, and the little guys where pretty happy. Until one day I decided to stick my hand in and grab a fish. I went to go show my parents (Who where downstairs) but he slipped out of my hands when I was walking down the stairs. He fell a good ten or fifteen feet. I started screaming, parents heard, picked up the fish and ran him to the tank. He was shocked at first, but he lived. :D
