Interesting filtration method I just discovered

So, I was maintianing my tank, and discovered a previously unknown form of filtration!

I call it a sideways sponge. In my Aquaclear 200 filter, I have a tube siphoning water out of the filter, so the surface isn't disturbed by the output. There's a sponge filter insert sideways in my filter to keep the ceramic biological media away from the output tube. It's fairly open, so water trickles through it, resulting in a semi-wet fitration, very similar to a bio-wheel. The output siphons so fast there's a 2inch water level difference between either side of the sponge, so water is constantly moistening the sponge. It's proven very effective in maintianing my 0 ammonia and 0 nitrate levels, all with a dirt cheap filter.

Sounds somewhat like the older type wet and dry systems called trickle filters. Were very efficient biological filters. A firm called Tunze used to sell a whole range of these modules, haven't heard much from them for years though.
