Interested In Dwarf Puffers.

They will devour shrimp. Mine destroyed a 3 inch pond snail. 2 of them. And ate them.

ive been doing a lot of reading on dp's aswell as im going to be getting one for my next tank.

certain people seem to think that they are really hard to take care of but im yet to read anything that would make me agree.

water quality is very important. a fishless cycle is definately needed.

live food is good for puffers, but most are happy to eat frozen and have live as a treat.

dwarfs to not "need" snails. lots of people on here seem to think that dwarfs need snails, and their shells. this is untrue. dwarfs do not suffer the same problems with their beaks as other puffers so snails shells are not not needed.

other than the things above i dont beleave they're any harder to look after than any other fish yet certain people seem to bang on about how super hard they are to look after.

yeah. they have a massive ph range (6-8) a big temp range "22°C - 29°C.

http://#131###.com/rensaquarium.htm this guy has bred them. he didnt know the ideal ph or temp at first and they still spawned.

seem like really hardy fish to me. snails are there natural diet in the wild. so i would still suggest feeding them some snails. but its not needed daily.

They are really easy to take care of. Mine eat frozen food and when I feel generous they get snails from the main tank chucked in.

Have a look at my video Nom nom nom

Meant to add - they got great personalities. As soon as I enter the kitchen my every move is being watched. And as soon as I bring out the purple bowl (the one I defrost the frozen food in) it's party time in the tank. Excitement galore :hyper:

can you upload a pic of your tank crazyforcorydoras? id love to see it :)

you too salam! how big is your tank and how many have you got in it?

I have only got a FTS from before the puffers went in. Here it is:

I must confess, I am overstocked and I know it, but I have never had any problems at all. It is 25 litres (7-8 US gallons?!), two dwarf puffers, two otos and one ghost shrimp. I added them all after a fishless cylce and have had 0 ammonia and 0 nitrite throughout. All fish are happy, the puffers get on with each other and if one needed some retreat there are enough hiding places. Both are female from what I can see, so less aggression. I do two water changes a week which is easy enough on such a small tank. 10 minutes and it's done. As I said, overstocked, but I know what I am doing and have had no problems. I really love watching them, they are the smallest fish with the biggest personality

lovely tank!

im looking to do something very simular tbh. around 25-30 litres. 2 puffers and a couple of ottos or shrimp.

Thanks. They are really fine, just make sure you don't forget a water change as they are messy.

Well then you lot have talked me into it!!! I think they look so cute and provided my tank is beautifully cycled I see no reason why I cannot keep some puffers. Ok - so I have a 90 l tank. I would like to do this:

3 x Dwarf puffers
6x pygmy cory's

Does this sound ok?
Anyone else happy with puffers?

Sounds good! Just put in three pygm cories to start off, to see if the puffers mind them. I was very happy with my puffers, awesome fish!

Sadly my puffers have passed... there tankis now inhabited by a pair of mocha Amphipiron Ocellaris.

I love puffers always have! I have a slightly larger species the red tailed red eye puffer! They get about 2 inches! But was originally planning on dwarfs! They actually are easier to take care of then most people think! Just make sure you treat for IP and use a varied diet! I have 6 different foods I use regularly and they always have there special treats! And with water changes I do extra! 2 changes a week of about 30 percent each! I don't have to do this at all water quality is perfect but they can be messy and I like to keep there tank sparkling! One water change is enough, nitrates will only be about 15 ppm if I only do one so, I also have some ghost shrimp with them but they are only food that hasn't been caught yet they will eventually catch them! I have never tired actual "tank mates" but may in a couple of weeks!

Good luck with your new friends! You'll love them! I know people say it all the time but they really do have so much personality

I would really recommend these great little puffers. On another note I would highly suggest that you worm them after purchase as they are notorious for carrying IP, I have a male and female in a 9g arc and the female started showing signs of IP but still had a healthy appetite. I used Wormer Plus and it looks like it has done the trick, she is slowly adding on the pounds.

Oh, and regarding tankmates. I have x4 big 2.5 inch amanos living with them, these shrimp are fearless. My puffers are actually afraid of them. When they get their bloodworms in the morning the shrimp swim after the puffers trying to grab the worms out of their mouths. The best was when the puffers had each end of a big juicy bloodworm and an amano charged in a snatched it from them. RCS are very much a gamble especially if they are of a small size. I have 3 fully grown adults in there which the puffers completely ignore but smaller ones in the past have made tasty snacks for them.
I contacted Plythmouth discus about the wormer as it is labeled that it CAN kill some shrimp but the helpful Chris there told me that their tests on RCS have been successful as long as the correct dosage was applied. He told me he hadn't tested it with amano's so couldn't give me a definitive answer. I decided to try it as Peanut (my little girl) was in a bad way, and am happy to report after two dosages (redosed after 4 days, it will have biodegraded) the amanos were fine, one even moulted during dosing. So from my own personal research I can confirm it is safe for Amanos.
