Hi all,

After buying an eheim ecco pro and having nothing but troubles with it, I contacted the shop and told them I wanted to send it back.

Anyhow, my tank is about 110L, I dont plan to have a huge amount of fish in there as I would like to experiment with planted. I am so hacked off right now with the canister and its noise and the media baskets coming loose from eachother that I am really thinking about just going internal. I know there is nothing like a good canister, but will an internal filter be sufficient enough to deal with a planted tank and if so, can someone recommend a good internal that is quiet, as it's going to be in my bedroom.

Thanks.

Lolly

Fluval U3 is OK but the Fluval 205 will always be better

i would sugest stick with the external filter for all the right reasons, clearer water less cluter in tank etc.

i changed to a 120 lt tank this year and when i set up my first external filter i had troubles so i know how your feeling but lets see if myself and others here can help you through as youll be happier once sorted.

biggest trouble i found was both in and out pipes need to be as short and as straight as possible,no long or low points lower than the filter/pump otherwise youll have air in filter you wont get ride of.

i am not an expert but will try to help, can you post pictures of the eheim plumbed up to tank so we can see if your making any simple mistakes as i did earlier this year

TY for replies :)

Well, I have shot myself in the foot in one way as the cabinet the aquarium was meant to go on, was not suitable, therefore the tank is on the floor as I just cannot afford to get another cabinet for it right now.

I know this isnt exacly the idea place for the filter or the tank but really have no choice right now.

However, after placing a little vaseline on the impeller, the filter quietened down and it was lovely. Then after a few days, I added 10 litres to the tank and then started to notice a trickling sound, I opened up the filter and the bottom media basket had come loose from the other. I placed it back and then primed and started filter, then the humming noise started again, the filter seems to work the air out okay but its just this noise, it seems like everytime i open the canister, i go back to square one. I can almost hear like a grinding sound if that makes sense.

I've tried to place the pipes in a way where there is not alot of sag, but there is a little on the intake.

I dont want to have to send it back but it's causing hassle and feel as if my 80 pound was spent on exactly what I dont want, a noisy filter! I can try and get a pic tomorrow.

TY for help.

if you end up going internal, my juwel filter is whisper quiet, seems quieter than my mates equivelant fluval internal filter. the juwel isnt as fancy, but it pumps, it filters and its quiet. its also a lot less obvious, as its black.

i dont know which type mine is as i didnt get it new. but i cant hear it, and my tank is in my bedroom. all i know about it is that it was about 18 inches tall till i shortened it. my same mate has another tank with a internal juwel and says thats also quieter than his new fluval internal. and when he turns the aerator on thats built into the fluval, its deafening.

is it the juwel that is built into the tank? thats what i have got on my Rio 180.
I think its vibrating against somethign cos its quiet when the lid is open, but growls a bit when its closed. Noisy was over-reacting, but mine isn't silent

lolly can you take the filter off your tank, take all media out of it so thats its just a pump and set it up on a bucket of water which is higher than the pump with straight pipe work and run it?

if its still noisy then your pump is faulty,if its nice and queit then theres your answer, sounds to me like your tank is to low for your filter.

thats the problem i had with mine as my tank is only about 10" off floor and i was trying to pick up and pump water from the opposite of the tank so that pump was hidden from site.basicaly the pumps can only work up and down not side ways.

give that a go and keep us posted.

no mine is a big black rectangular box that can come out in one bit, as is my mates one.

Heya,

Thats a good idea, i never really thought of doing that. The filter gets noisy after i've opened it, its still a bit noisier than it was before, but after i left it alone for a few days it seemed not to bother me that much. Maybe I got used to the sound or maybe it settled down a bit. It's not a bad filter, water is really clear and there is quite a strong flow of water too so I guess i'm just going to bite the bullet and get used to the noise.

However, if it becomes ridiculous again I will defo try what you suggested :good:

TY
