lets cut to the chase, whos covered for damages caused by aquarium failures/mishaps etc, is the cover under your contents or your buildings insurance, the reason i ask is that im looking into taking out cover incase the worst happens after a (thankfully) minor incident with a part filled 10 gal and having seen the damage that, that small quantity of water caused im now VERY concerned about the potential costs involved in the (hopefully and not wanting to jinx myself) unlikely event that one of my larger tanks were to fail, a couple of gal's seems like a hell of a lot of water when its on the floor and i cant begin to imagine what 65gals on the floor looks like!!
Any help or info regarding where to get cover etc would be greatly appreciated, our landlords have buildings insurance but that doesnt cover aquariums ( i have asked) and they do not want to pay any extra premium or change providers as they have all there buildings covered by the same local company and receive a joint discount/

i'm a bit worried as my 55gallon tank is upstairs so if it were to crack it would do a lot of damage, me insurance company (nationwide)
cover for breakages of fish tanks as standard, i'm sure they would probably try and get out of it though if it happened.

It's true, any insurance your landlord has will cover damage to their property only. If a tank were to fail you could be held responsible for any damage caused to other tenants property, along with damage to your own property. I would definitely suggest getting renters insurance to cover yourself. In my first apartment my upstairs neighbor had a fire ... the fire department put the fire out, and in the process the water ran down the walls and pooled on my floor. Luckily none of my stuff was badly damaged, because the rental company's insurance didn't cover my personal property, and I didn't have any insurance of my own. Needless to say I was at my insurance office the next day to get renters insurance. Fortunately I never had to use it, but after my close call I wasn't going to take any chances.

is that under your contents cover??

yes it's covered by there contents insurance "Water escaping from any fixed water or heating installation,
domestic appliance, water bed or fish tank" taken from the nationwide document.

thankyou thats just what i needed to know im gonna have a hunt around and see what the other banks have to offer if not it'l be them as its there in plain black and white!!

Interesting topic this and got me on the phone to my insurance company I have contents only as I'm renting.

I'm covered for accidental damage although if it is a leak that has happened over time the tank is not fullfillig it's duty thus making the policy void.

He laughed on the phone however and said if I slipped and knocked it over I would be covered - strange!
