I had a fish a few years back that my mom had bought from petsmart. She thinks that it may have been a tetra but im not sure. It was a small fish that looked clear but it had a neon color in the spine area. My mom was told that a ink of some kind can be added to them and that it does not harm them. Well it actually died a little while after BUt I did have goldfish die before then and didnt know not to add a new fish without waiting a while. Anyway my question is does anyone know what kind of fish this was and is it safe to do that? thanks for the help!

in general, you want to wait two weeks after adding more fish. How long ago was your last death? Have you checked your ammonia and nitrite levels in the tank?

The process of adding the dye is actually very rough on the fish. I will look for the web site with info for you.

http://www.deathbydyeing.org is a pretty good site for information. :)

The fish sounds like a Painted Glass Fish to me...did it look like this?

Here is a link that has lots of information on dyed fish. http://www.deathbydyeing.org/moreau.htm I can't remember the type of fish they are, but i know what you are tlaking about. But do read about dyed fish before buying them again. The short of it is dyed fish live very short lives compared to their non-dyed counterparts. They are also much more prone to illness, and i think its something like 70% of fish don't survive the dying process. So basically injecting the dye is not safe for the fish.

Also, since it has been so long since you had fish in the tank, your tank will have to go the cycling process again. This is the process where beneficial bacteria are built up in the filter. They have links about cycling your tank in the FAQ section.

Basically, this is a very cruel procedure. They are injected with large needles, which is stressful; a lot of fish die during/shortly after the process. The dye often leads to cancer, and the fish tend to be less generally healthy. So- not something you want to encourage by buying them again.
