Hi

I've been cycling a 50cm tank for 2 weeks now using a household ammonia solution and everything was going well until I looked in my tank tonight. Ammonia readings had fallen to 0ppm even when adding 10 drops of the solution a day but nitrites were still high. Anyway, I looked in the tank tonight to find lots of particles floating in the tank which seemed odd - then I realised that they were all of a uniform shape (about 4mm long and of a hair's width). They were bobing around in the filter wake (Eheim Aquaball) so I turned it off to check what would happen. When the water stopped moving the white 'hairs' didn't. I then realised that they were some kind of tiny worm. Closer inspection of the tank glass revealed small louse like creatures moving over the surface of the glass.

What are these things and where did they come from? I decided they didn't look good so I added a large dose of the ammonia and I assume that this will kill them. There is no substrate in the tank and the only change in the last week was the addition of a plastic plant and drainpipe cave from lfs (both washed thoroughly in tapwater. The tank water has not been changed since the start of cycling and it is about 50% v. hard tap water and 50% RO water. The tank previously held a planted setup but it was thorughly washed with tap water, as was the filter.

Thanks
Ronan
