Ok then I came up with something new so the tank looks evenly stocked...

Prefer Top Level
- 3 Gold Gouramis
- 3 Blue Gouramis
- 3 Pearl Gouramis
- 3 Dwarf Gouramis

Prefer Mid-Level
- 8 Platies

Prefer Bottom Level
- 12 Corydoras

I've never kept Platys before, are they hard to keep?

Platies are very easy to keep 2 males 6 females would be your best bet otherwise the females will get stressed by constant advances from the males. Still ike the gourami idea and will be very curious to see if it works out. Keep way more females than males. good luck

Are female platies less colorful than males?
Are female Gouramis less colorful than males?

Hopefully someone at the fish store will be able to help me with picking out the females and males out, I'm not really an expert at that.

For the platies the males and females are equally as colorful. For the gouramis the males tend to be more colorful. One way i sex the gouramis is to look at their fins. if they are rounded at the ends this indicates a female. If they are more pointed this indicates a male. However, if they are young they all look like females. HTH

you could still get 2-3 clown loaches since they're really very cool fish. I have 2 right now and they're very amusing.

I would say not but it may be ok if they were pygmy corries.
