as far as betta housing a few ideas any craft store, michaels, Joanns, ect. (or even the craft section at walmart) will have bowl that can be used to make great little homes for them, I have one of my bettas in a almost gallon bowl that I got for like 6 $$ at Michaels.

I buy my bettas 1 gallon plexi-glass tanks at Wal-Mart, they have a little filter and a light and I think they are very active and happy. They only cost $10.00, and that comes with the pump and light, everything. I think it's a really good deal, I have 7 of them and I think they are great. Well worth the money. They're called aquaview plus, you can see pictures of five of mine in Members Aquarium Pictures under the topic "closet bettas"
