probably.
i didn;'t know you were using the rift lake salts, but it you are, use them and dark gravel.
Awesome, is there anything I need to do to prepare the sand before getting putting into the tank?
E.g. boiling or something?
probably.

The only Cichlids I would ever keep in a triangular tank would be Malawis, given their mobile territory approach to life. It's a good thing you really like them.
I retired ahead of plan to care for my wife, so based on that experience, I think that whatever you do, you need to adjust it. A smoothly running tank that that makes itself work is no distraction later in the evening or when she's asleep, and all caregivers need something busy and fun to allow for a change. You need to lose yourself in projects. My advice would be to take this advice you're getting, get it slightly wrong, adapt, improvise, and move along.
But don't overcomplicate things...
I have ended up with tanks of killies, the ultimate fiddle around, improvise and adjust based on learning fish group....
