Importance Of Sumps

what are the importance of sumps?
upgrading soon from a 30 to 100 , and ive seen people post topics of sumps such as how to build them and such but i wan some general knowledge of why they are important. what do they do , i have an idea but need answers. i am sump ignorant :someone throw some knowledge my way.

It is a great way to hide all of your equipment and aadd some water volume. There are many keepers who use the area as a refugium for critter growth, as well as various macro algaes for nutrient export.

I like to grow out frags there as well.

Some sumps also come with trickle filters that are pretty good as well.
