Our pet shop had some vertically striped catfish (black & white) which he said he got off a customer who stopped keeping fish..... He asked me what they were, and immediately, the name "Acanthadorus Spynosysomus" came to mind (don't ask me why)... I did take all 5 of them however (as exchange payment for some guppies I took to him).....

Getting back home. I (image) Googled "Acanthadorus Spynosysomus"... and no results was found... I Googled "catfish" and the closest to what I acquired now is a fish called "striped Raphaelli's"... What then is an "Acanthadorus Spynosysomus"???... & where on earth did I get that name from??

Pics :) - could it be a humbug catfish? Or have you stumbled onto the bargain of the century and got some free Zebra plecs

OK... I've taken a few pics when they were still in the bag & they're still on the camera... I don't think they came out that well, but when I released them in the tank, they immediately went into the caves & dark hole, so chances of another view is unlikely.... I'll get the cam now and download (upload) tose (poor quality) pics.

Here we are....

definately raphael catfish :good: errrm Platydoras armartulus i think the latin name is (i know its a platydoras)
these things are funny when you keep them in groups because they sometimes pile up on each other in the same hiding place lol a bit like clownloaches. careful though, they'll eat anything small enough  as with all catfish lol

as for the "Acanthadorus" ...i think you're meaning Acanthodoras spinosyssomus(?)
they look similar (but uglier in my opinion) but they aren't a platydoras species.

hope i've helped your mind :fun:

Pink.

Those are definatly raphael catfish, no doubt =P looking at your pictures an up at my tank where one just so happens to be hanging out near the front of the tank.

Sounds just like a raphael catfish too. They like to hide. A LOT. Until I cleaned my tank this morning I thought for sure at least two of my cats were dead but lo and behold there they were when I moved ornaments!

Were you looking for some other information on them? Or just an ID?

Thanks for the info so far.... yes... more, more, more.... Are they peacefull, have they been bred and how big do they get, etc.etc.etc. Anything you can tell me.

Should hit about 4" fairly quickly then slow down reaching about 8" eventually, they get about 6" wide too!

They are pretty nocturnal but can be convinced to hide in full view with good positioning of caves/wood plants etc.

Eat pretty much anything but go nuts for meaty foods (mine come out of hiding at evening feeding)

So far mine have shown no interest in being a threat to any smaller fish and can be quite active after lights out or in a dimly lit tank.

Lovely fish. platydoras armatulus is correct I think the one you were thinking of is the spotted version which stays a bit smaller.

this might help

Thank you all... I think I'm going to like them.... (also think it was a bargain exchange... 20 Guppy males and 20 females for 5 of them)!

ATM, I wasn't sure of them, so I put them in with cichlids... 3 Astatotillapias and 3 Livingstonniis.... They seem just fine... plenty of tunnels, caves and holes to hide in.
