I’m still quite new to this, but I would like to have a planted tank.

I currently have
-10 gallon with a three fake plants, a piece of fake driftwood and a handful of neon tetras, a light, filter, and heater
-2 gallon with a betta and two broadleaf plants tied to a rock the LFS recommended.

First: where’s the best place to learn the very basics of a planted tank? I have read the stickies but they assume I have a passing knowledge of aquatic plants.

Can I turn my current 10 gal tank into a planted tank?

If getting a new tank is recommended, what size should I look at? I want to go bigger as I’ll have more room in my new place and I do not like the limitation on fish size in the 10 gal. However, I don’t have a couple hundred dollars to put into it right now.

Say I walked into the LFS this weekend, what would be on my shopping list?

A 10g tank is fine for plants. Get some vallis, ambulia, hygrophillas, ludwigia, elodia and hydrilla. You can also buy some iron plant food for them. I like Sera Florena perosnally.
When you buy the plants get a couple of each type and see which ones do the best over the next month.

I hate the idea of fishing line or strings in my tank to tie plants...

I found that wedging plants in cracks in drift wood works great. It only takes a while for the roots to attach to the wood.
