Ive got 2 tropical tanks and am thinking of closing one down and going for a salty cube tank (something like the 2ft cube one which is for sale), buying second hand so i get all the kit for sod all money.

sounds like the right lines? im 50:50 at the mo...

could do with knowing your best reasons to switch to the salty side to sway me...

im looking for something like a cube as i cant be bothered with a nano, id rather go big from the outset.

let me know your thoughts

also, anyone got any links to stunning set ups? I have been browsing but didnt know if there were a few tanks that people on here found outstanding?

thanks for your help

If you go to the salty side, you will not look back, trust me its so much more rewarding :good:

cheers, Im not too scared by the cost, if the final result is worth it im hapy to spend. I have been reading around and am thinking i should avoid reef for a while until i become aquainted with keeping a salty tank in general. I am just missing that final thing to sway me!

Keeping a reef is not really harder imo, its more expensive for sure but with a bit of research you will be fine, go for the full on reef if cost is not an issue, check out the marine journels on here for more inspiration.

My first fish I have ever kept have been marines. Its not easy, but by no means is it difficault (touch wood!!). Lots to learn but its super interesting. I have a slice of a coral reef in my room, it doesnt get cooler than that.

I was thinking of a 2ft cube once.
You can make lovely scapes with them.
I say go for it!
We need more marine newbies on TFF.
Im new to the salty side and carnt wait to get started.

nice tank, can i ask for the brief specs?

The reason im looking to buy second hand really is that someone has already done the work of buying all the right kit- a bit cheeky really!

hi
it would be better if you started it new only because you will learn more from setting up your own tank what fish to start off with it is better to go new and it is all about have time involeved in the tank i first started of with a secoand hand tank and jumped into things adding to many fish at once doing to many large water changes stuff like that you learn from it all

regards scott

Before trying a reef ..check if any medications , especially copper based, have been used in the tank as these are toxic to most of the inverts in a reef...
Worth the jump but AND GOOD IDEA TO GO LARGER AS CAN BE EASIER TO MAINTAIN THAN A NANO...ALSO START NANO AND YOU'LL ONLY WANT A BIGGER ONE ANYWAY,LOL....

This is my 3foot cube reef tank....

cheers,

I have done all the water change, watching your stocking before so am well versed in it, just looking to save the hassle and cash from buying everything separately- saves time really. im more than happy to take it slow.

thanks

I found that when i started with trops ages ago you always want bigger!
Id be planning to by off someone who looks like they know what they are on about (give them a severe questioning!) plus id be looking to buy off a forum classified section- i could then look up there previous posts.

your tank is stunning, how many years has that taken?

Good way to buy second hand mate...weel thought through there...
Thanx about tank..been running now since aug/sep last year....Low cost as only uses deep sand bed, live rock and a skimmer....no other expensive equipment is used on here..

nice, looks like you have a few quids worth of coral etc, buy it all that size? or frags?

While I don't have much experience with smaller cube tanks like that, I will say that I'm a pretty large fan of buying used equipment. With the exception of bulbs and RO filters, pretty much every piece of marine hardware will last a LONG time so go nuts and buy used :).

that reminds me...

With suppose a 2ft cube tank, do you reccomend buying a RO kit or trusting my LFS for supply?

I have a place i can rather conveniently plumb it in, a little 'room' with the washer and dryer etc- really acessible pipes for supply and drainage as they run up the wall!

am i correct in assuming the expense of a kit would be worth it in the long run?
