Well im cycling a community tank, going to have 6 harlequin rasbora in it and 6 sterbai corys. I think i also want a snail as im setting up a seperate shrimp tank.

But, do they create a lot of waste as its a 15G tank and ill be stocked with fish up to 1.5" per gallon.

I was thinking about an apple snail or a nerite snail...

I noticed is says apple snail shells will erode in a pH of under 7.0 and my pH drops to about 6.6 during the day when my co2 is on.

So im thinking about a Zebra Snail as they also eat algae.... What do i need to know about them?

Sorry to bump,

But would having two zebra snails and an apple snail be a problem? Would they add a lot onto my bioload?

Would the apple snails shells be ok in the 6.4/6.6 pH during the day?

not sure what that link was meant to be, dont think it worked though. I'm not 100% on this but I assume if you have fairly hard water or feel the apple snails cuttle fish bone then this should offset the slightly too acidic water and strengthen the shell. And yeah your tank is already overstocked and they are fairly messy. Probably best to avoid them

Sorry but i disagree that its overstocked.

The fish i mentioned adult size in total is 1.5" per gallon, obviously by the time they reach their adult size my tank will have matured and after around 6 months the inch per gallon is non existent.

Anyway, enough of that.

So apple snails are quite messy you say?

My apples are fine...and I should know. I've only had ermm 200 ish babies...

They're fine in the pH you mentioned, but I do supplement mine with calcium in the form of a cuttle fish bone (the type you give to birds).

They aren't huge waste producers, but in the same way you wouldn't get a plec to clean algae, you shouldn't get a snail to clean algae.

Also I agree your tank isn't overstocked at all (presuming you have adequate filtration ofc )

Apple snails require 10 gallons for the initial snail and 5 gallons for every additional snail when at adult size or else the chance of them attempting to escape is greatly increased with reduction in tank size. Nerite snails require 5 gallons for initial and 3 gallons for every additional snail so are a bit more content in a smaller environment. really upto you completely which you want to get as said you can add some calcium in liquid form or via cuttlefish bone or some shells.

Are nerite snails big waste producers?

Not particularly they are equal to about an 1" of fish if you want to go via that rather innacurate scale with apple snails being 2". Comparitively to other inverts such as atyid shrimp they are quite big wasters.

I have asolene spixie snails..
They aren't a heavy bioload, and if they do get too much when breeding just change the water a little eh?
