I realize that we can't comment in the thread itself but I just wanted to express how moved I was by everyone's pets, and how much of a richness it really is to share our lives with other creatures (aaand autocorrect just tried to change "creatures" to "cretins". My phone thinks highly of this topic....)

My wife and I bought a house with my mother-in-law. She has her own apartment downstairs. She also had 2 border collies. Key word in that sentence was had.

Now she has 3 border collies, and whilst each individual dog is fine in their own right, save for the puppy, that means my wife and I and our children don’t get to have a dog, due to municipal limit of 3 dogs per household.

I didn’t know about the third dog until after papers were signed and we had moved in. Now the new dog is going through somewhat of a phase, and that phase so far has lasted a couple months, in which the last thing I hear every night before I go to bed is 3 dogs spazzing our and barking at each other. It’s also the first thing I hear in the morning when I’m woken up and hour before my alarm goes off. So please, keep posting pictures of your great pets, before I become a non-dog person... I’m so happy to keep fish, because they can’t bark.........

Well it’s gotten to that point. If the dogs want to have a barking contest, I win.

unfortunately, she is tied legally to the mortgage, so there’s not much I can do on the her being homeless front.

We’ll keep fighting about it. One day the gate in the back yard might stop working though. At that point another loving family will be adopting 1-3 dogs

Border Collies are farm dogs. They need a huge amount of exercise & socialising. Is the new dog younger than the others?

Even taking them out for a walk might not be enough. It might need several long walks.

Well, clearly @Naterjm this is merely the signal the world is giving you to show up in her living room and start building that ceiling/floor reinforcement for that 150gal tank. Call it "noiseproofing" that you have to install because of the dogs that she apparently can't care appropriately for. Dogs that are properly trained and appropriately cared for (in this case I think @AilyNC hits the nail on the head w the excercise thing) don't cause a ruckus multiple times a day at the wrong times of day. Sure, dogs play and make noise that way, but dogs are salient enough beings to understand when the owner says not now, unless the owner has no control....

And three border collies?!?!? Of all breeds... Only thing I can think of worse than that would be 3 huskies, but that would be manageable if the owner were a runner since after their 10miler every morning the huskies would lay around waiting for dinner lol.

Oh and, with regard to the mortgage, you can always move your own family out and sell your own half of the mortgage. Don't start feeling stuck if it's truly not working.

Lol my dad has 4 huskies.
He has a huge yard and just leaves his back door open all day every day and they go in and out as they want and run around like goofs as they wish.
Though he never has any socks or a couch anymore. Hit the nail on the head about huskies though.
Not a life for everyone haha but theyre his babies.
