Thats cool, you dont really need your own TDS yet IMO (whilst its beneficial in alot of ways). Your RO unit should be doing fine, and there should be no nitrates in your RO water, its probably just the fact that your test kit isnt going to accurately work in RO water, thats whats giving you those crazy results.

When you mix your SW, are you leaving it for a few days aerated (or mixing with a powerhead) and heated? Some salts when freshly mixed can be very corrosive, and its beneficial to leave it stand for a few days, or overnight, heated and with a powerhead to mix it.
