Just been out in the car to post a few bits and came accross a little dog that was obviously injured. He couldn't put his back leg on the floor and was hoping along. He was filthy so obviously he is either a stray or a crulty case and having already been bitten by one stray dog decided to report this to the RSPCA.

When I did eventually find their details I was told that because he was on the street it wasn't their job and I would have to call my local dog warden  Ok so I found that number and was told "we don't pick up dogs after 3pm"! At this point I am about to throttle someone so I called the RSPCA back and told them just how annoyed I was and after alot of persistance someone (or I am being told someone) is going to look for the dog!

Why does it have to be so difficult????

We have found so many stray dogs that now I just tell my husband to let them go. On many occasions we, too ,tried to contact people to come & pick the dogs up to no avail. Once, we had to take a great big smelly, wet dog to the police station as they wouldent come out to get it. Been a dog lover , it upsets me to see dogs wondering by them selves, but through past expereance , althogh it upsets me, we just shoo them away. Some people just dont want to know. They just expect you to keep the dog.

Not quite the same, but....I found an injured pigeon once and no one would treat it. The vet said he was obliged to destroy it if I brought it in.

I know they have rules for a reason, but they are not sitting with a warm, helpless, injured creature in their lap desperately making phone calls when they write this policy.

I hope the little dog ends up ok.

Got no faith in the rspca anymore, have no respect for them, just out for making money then saving animals.

Could do with a dog protection league like the cat one, they seem to care.

The rspca will probably put the dog down if its a stray and injured they wont pay for treatment.

Your best bet would be a rescue centre like dog trust they would treat it and try and rehome. Although you would hvae to bring the dog to them I think.

The RSPCA will and do pay for treatment on stray animals. It can often be hard work getting it, but they do. They provide a log number and vet fees (not sure to what extent).

It's not the RSPCA's job to pick up strays so with regards to the original post it shows they're going above and beyond their charity's aims (I won't say "duties" because the RSPCA is a charity not a government office), although in this case the dog is injured, which is probably why they stepped in.

It is the dog warden's responsibility to pick up stray dogs, most only work certain hours as council resources are often limited. After hours stray dogs are in some areas the responsibility of the police, although I've read somewhere this is changing.

As for what will happen to this chap, in most cases stray dogs are taken to council pounds, or boarding kennels with council contracts. They have 7 days to find the owner and then after that in many cases their time is up and they are PTS if they are not taken out by a rescue or reclaimed. In some cases, pounds do their utmost to prevent PTS, but ultimately lots of dogs are put to sleep every day across the country. There are a handful of rescues who do amazing work with their local pounds and transport dogs across the country via a network of volunteers, to suitable rescues where they can be assessed, vaccinated, neutered and then rehomed. This is a huuuuge task, as dogs from the pound are generally unassessed and unvaccinated. They are not ideal dogs to adopt straight out of the pound for these reasons.

If people want to help, I can pass on the links to a couple of boards where this job is done on a daily basis. Transporters and coordinators are frequently needed.

Tomorrow, one of these death row dogs is coming to us as a foster (Seth the Boxer) if we can find transport. We are very lucky in that he has a history so we have some idea of what he will be like in a home. At the moment, transport for this is not arranged and if his time is up tomorrow. He is one of many dogs in similar situations, many aren't as lucky in that they don't have a rescue to back the pound up when their time comes.

where do you need taking from and to and when? i may be able to help, i've not much planned for tomorrow and Ian's gotta tinker with his car.

Hiya Alice :D Thanks ever so much for your offer. *hug*

JUST after I typed that message, I received a PM on the rescue board saying transport is now sorted! I'm sat here blubbing LOL. He's coming here! I'm going to start a new thread for him. :D

awwww bless, glad you've got it sorted.

if your ever in that situation again you've got my number, both me and Ian have our own cars and your not too far away so we'd love to help.

I love dogs and can't wait until we move so we can have one. simply do not have the room right now though and there's no point 'rescuing' a dog only to keep it cramped up in unsuitable conditions.
