I was just wondering if you can put one or more female bettas in a community tank .. or any at all.. I wouldn't take the chance of putting a male in there even if we could..

Females can be just as nasty in a community as males can. It is best to start a species tank and keep multiple females (preferably from the same spawn that have grown up together) in something 10 gallons or bigger. People ARE going to tell you differently, but this is where I stand.

I agree with Orky, despite the fact that I have females in my community. It is heavily planted, 20 gallons, they are young females, and are all very timid and non-aggressive. It is still very dangerous though, even in good conditions. It depends on the personality of the fish if it can be done or not.

I think most responses will be in agreement that it can be done but it isn't worth the risk.

I don't have any experience in females in a community by themselves, and really wouldn't try it(knowing the temperament of my girls).I would suggest having a female betta only tank. I have a 10 gallon community with 6 females, and everyone gets on fine. I have definitely had problems and one had to be permanently taken out of the tank, but now everything is fine. Make sure it is heavily planted, put them in one by one, and keep a good eye on them for a while. There will be some minor fights, but they should work out the pecking order before too long.

I have a 50 gallon community which i added 5 females to and its heavily planted with plenty of places to hide out. There was aggression to begin with but they all have their own territory and are all doing fine.
I added the male plakat and though he chases the nosey females that come near him and tease him everyone is fine.
