I don't know how they are originally bred but some of the hybrids can breed. My sis has a few that she's bred.

The only ones who know for sure are the people who created the hybrids to begin with. I think the general opinion is that it was more like artificial insemination.

I imagine it's relatively easy to breed a midas/red devil with a sev... my midas hybrid laid eggs without a male of any species even present
I haven't got a clue which species would serve as which parent, though

They're engineered - all artificial. The same way they breed off tails, breed in extra tails, or whatever other mutation of the month is in style.

Uh... actually, it doesn't take genetic engineering to get those traits -- nor have most fish been genetically altered to produce them (with the exception of Glolites, of course.) Honestly, we don't have the technology to easily pick such specific traits and add/remove them at will. There's still a lot of research being done on that with much simpler organisms than fish.

What happens is that mutations such as extra tails or complete lack of tail show up at random, and then breeders select for the trait
In nature such mutations would be bred out in a generation or two, but with the fish safe in their tanks, breeders are free to select for traits that would be detrimental to a fish in the wild.
