I'm at work and I finished all my work AGAIN. This might sound like a good thing... means guilt free surfing of the internet right? Well yeah, cept there's nothing I want to buy so no window shopping, the boards have slowed down and I don't have any speaker so I can't even listen to music.

*Sigh*

Sitting in a little office with a window that looks out onto a carpark that has no cars in it so is reminiscent of a prison exercise yard. Oh the fun...

Get a job at Fish Inc :D

Lol, me thinks they probably don't pay as much as I get here. Although that really would be a laugh. I went down a week or so ago to spend the rest of my voucher and heard one of the staff members telling someone off because they were being stubborn. He was sympathetic at first because they're been fooled by a pet/lfs into a fish in cycling situation with lots of fish. But then they were all like 'well he said it was ok... he'll let us buy more fish...'

When I finish all my work they give me more! The lazy bones do little the workers do lots! All for the same pay lol.

My boss isn't in... and hasn't phoned the office yet today. Otherwise I'd have asked for more work, it really is that boring here... although it does help that I enjoy my work.

I enjoy mine but I only work officially for 5 months a year. If I was there everyday it would likely drive me crazy! I'm at home at the mo with my daughter. Shes watching winnie the pooh and I'm waiting for some stimulating conversation! I too have been shopping online, read the news, checked the classifieds and now bored!

Lol, you do sound very similar to me... minus the child anyways.

I work outside of Uni term time so that's around 5-6months a year. And even then I normally only do 3 day weeks (more if there is more work and my boss just landed 2 weeks worth of full time web work so I may be doing more time in the coming weeks).

I've resorted to texting my OH, his mum wanted me to make some wedding invitations but she has neglected to decide on anything or tell me anything. She seemed to think I'd just magic them out of thin air with no input from her what so ever

What size do you want them? 'Ermmm'
What text do you want on them? 'Ermmm...'
What colours do you like? 'Ermm'
etc etc
She repeated several times 'Oh err can't you mock something up...I just want the design and then I'll think about the other stuff' *Insert banging head on desk emote here*

I was like...No... I can't do a design without a size, I can't plan a layout without the text and I can't do a design unless I know at the very least what colours you like...

Are you working at a design studio? I thought you were doing some kind of science at uni?

Yeah I'm a bit odd like that. :D

I work for an IT Support Company that also offer some design and web work (mainly via myself), the web/graphics stuff is coming in much more regular now though and I'm actually starting to get full projects to have/manage as opposed to just improving/correcting existing sites. However at Uni I'm doing Genetics.

tut gutted lol Ive just finished my degree in graphic design with a first and the only work I can find so far is an internship in Leeds which is an hour on train from where I live and the train costs more than they pay me but if its a start to a job it will be worth it but if its a dead end :/

I know what you mean, like I said primarily we're an IT support company but my boss has branched out into quite a bit of web work now he has me. I was primarily hired for a trial as a receptionist till he realised that my mis spent youth was 'mis spent' making websites. lol. It all sorta developed from there. I certainly wouldn't call myself a graphics designer. I know my way around photoshop enough for what I need...and I did once make a very nice looking unicorn out of a horse, owl and narwahl but other than that it's mainly simple stuff.

Have you considered trying to start your own business? Not sure what you'd offer but yah know...it'd be better than being stuck doing nothing and letting your knowledge go rusty. Plus you could put together a portfolio which I'm sure would help at interviews...

I could even let you do the wedding invitations for my OH's mum :shifty:  I'm just that nice a person....

Can they not pay for the travel expensive, that's the norm if a company wants you enough.

I work from home in Norwich half the time, and get plane/train/hotel covered when I'm needed to work in Preston or Walsall...I'm an software senior developer / tech lead

If they need you they'll pay...also have you looked into contracting, a lot of the work might be available through that, and with a first it should make jumping on that band wagon easier. Agencies can get you work and in the simplest setup you work through an umbrella company who pays your NI and tax and gives you the rest. Once in the swing of things you bring in your own accountant for the next contract and do your own taxes

You could always do an MBa or MSc for a year until things pick up?

Good luck with it all anyway

Hi thanks for the advice guys :) Ive been trying to find as much as I can but in the design industry grades seem irrelevant. All the way through college and uni you read these magazines and blogs that detail how you get into the industry after a degree and I never really believed it because to get your first step on the ladder you have to force your way in. Sometimes it becomes a bit like an impossible fairly tale with quests over mythical rainbows and finding keys behind enchanted water falls then you find the power cable to your mac after a battle with an ogre riding a unicorn then your seat comes from the throne of the princess that becomes your bride during your battle in the interview. But yeah it is all true but like I say just hoping this internship turns into a junior possition, one thing that isnt true about the design industry is the need for a fancy £200 portfolio in all my group interviews so far its been me and my friends from Hull with our £20 portfolios from our tiny stationers that have come out near the top :)

I work on a kind of free lance basis at the moment I do branding, advertising, promotion and generally would work alongside anything as a creative opportunity. I also do a bit of web and motion graphics as well. My website is www.iamahill.co.uk but its a bit out of date and was a bit rushed need to get the new one up pretty soon. But as for setting up my own business Im in Hull and there is this one company that just monopolizes a lot of the work here and the owner is such an idiot its unreal its not really design its just a good business man with a printing company.

Sorry if I came across as moody haha I wasnt trying to get at you just saying how lucky :)
