hey everyone

wandered if i could have some help with the livestock i would like to add to my soon to be setup. i have a 5ft 400L tank

i am planning on getting:

2 - 4 bangaii cardinals (could i also have other species of cardinal's with these?)
2 clowns
4 neon gobies or maybe 2 neons,2 watchmans
2 purple firefish
1 hawkfish

1 copperband butterfly (next year when tank is matured and im more experianced)
1 flame angel fish (same as above)

i would a nice schooling species, that doest get to big that would fit with the above fish aswell, any ideas?

as the CUC i would like:

2 - 4 cleaner shrimp
10 turbo snails
1 - 2 sad sifting stars
2 hermits (not sure what species)

does this seem ok? i like the shy species of fish, and wandered if these would be ok together?

the tank i think will hold more, but this is what i would like to build around

Hawkfish and Neon Gobies is a definite no-no, they'll become lunch. Te clowns and cardinals would be OK if kept well fed, and the clowns and cardinals are adult before the hawk goes in, but if it gets hungry, it is capable of taking them too

The Copperband may nip corals, but this is unusual, but there is a 50-50 chance of the Flame Angel munching corals. You make no mention of this being a reef set-up, but I thought I'm mention it just in case  Another reef specific thing would be that cleaner shrimp are royal pains in the neck when it comes to feeding sessile invertebrates, in particular Anemones...

All the best

many thanks for the reply rabbut

yes it will be a reef setup, sorry i should of said.

i didnt realise that the hawk was that way,i will give him a miss then.

can i have say 3 different species of cardinals,or is that a no no too?

im looking for a schooling fish that isnt agressive, any ideas?

I think one sand sifting star will be plenty. They tend to clean the sand and run out of things to eat. I had one for two years in a 125 gallon with a one inch sand bed and live rock.

2 - 4 bangaii cardinals (could i also have other species of cardinal's with these?) on no - the only ones i like are the ghost, they are stunning in a school

2 clowns what sort?

4 neon gobies or maybe 2 neons,2 watchmans They kick up a lot of sand, but lovely little fellows (watchmans)

2 purple firefish you would have to ensure you buy a mated pair, which can be difficult

1 hawkfish, right this is where i disagree with Rabbut - are you talking about the lovely scarlet hawk? If so, just make sure you put in your shrimps before the hawk and keep hin well fed (buy the smallest hawk you can get) he may well take a few snails but to be honest who cares, they are worth it

1 copperband butterfly (next year when tank is matured and im more experianced) a fish i would like as well

1 flame angel fish (same as above) flame back angels are hit and miss, some are reef safe, some are not!

i would a nice schooling species, that doest get to big that would fit with the above fish aswell, any ideas? The ghost cardinals school but maybe wreak fish (anthias)

as the CUC i would like:

2 - 4 cleaner shrimp - go with a pair of blood shrimps, they will not trample on your corals or nems
10 turbo snails - sounds a lot, you can always add to this, go for five to start with
1 - 2 sad sifting stars - just get one
2 hermits (not sure what species) yep fine

You have forgotten sand sifting snails such as nass or ceriths - about 15 or so

does this seem ok? i like the shy species of fish, and wandered if these would be ok together? Would look lovely imo

the tank i think will hold more, but this is what i would like to build around

I have seem Scarlet Hawks take fish their own size before, and they are more than capable of taking smaller tank mates. When well fed they probably pose little risk, but when you go away, they go without food and get hungry. Suddenly the well behaved Scarlet Hawk starts eyeing up it's tank-mates... When well kept and well fed they aren't too bad, but when your average keeper has a temporary "lapse" in their care and they are in with smaller tank mates, you have a recipe for some expensive fish lunches...

i think i wont take the chance.

like i said,i like the more "shyer" of fish species.

i dont want a goby being taken out by a hawk.

are the blue/green chromis ok to have as a school? and if yes how many?

are they compatible with what i would like?

i also forgot to ask, should i put any of these in,in a particular order?

i belive you should put the most teretorial fish in last, so they dont claim half the tank befor the others have a chance

and out of them, what would you say is the most terratorial? dont include the flame angel or copperband as these will go in,in say 6 or so months time

The Chromis should be fine with what you have planned I think

I'd do the Neon Gobies last out of the first fish, as they are a bit delicate, but other than that, whatever order, just don't double your numbers in a fortnight, and start with 2 after the cycle :good:

Hi Mark,
Have you got all the stuff you require now? Is the tank up and ready to go if it is I feel that a lack of picture is against Forum rules! :good:
