Nope, you've done fine, and others in the linked thread gave you some good advice.

Your tank won't "explode" without the carbon -- in fact, it's generally only good for a week or so anyway, and on top of that, many people run tanks without any carbon. Cut filter media won't hurt either, although if you really hack it up, it'll naturally be more inefficient.

You might want to put some carbon back in after treatment, though, to "mop up" the residual meds.
