Just measured and it's 48 x 12.5 x 20.5 (ish). It's an All Glass Aquarium, if that makes a difference...

Couple of questions:

Do I need to put anything underneath the substrate to support the weight of the Live Rock?

Could someone please discuss with me the disadvantages of having the tank viewable from both sides?

If I used the durso standpipe, how big would the overflow chamber have to be?

Wow, the rarely seen 55tall... Welcome to my world. As it was for me, sump selection and design will be hellish for you, I'm sorry. Because of the thin nature of our tanks, we're forced into using tanks a mere 10.5 inches wide. Only 3 models of tank are commercially sold in that width in the states. 10g, 15 tall, 20 xtall. All of the above are 20" long by 10.5" wide and just are increasing heights. The ideal sump for your stand is 40x10.5x12. That would give you lots of room to play with but nobody makes it. So the real question is, how good are your DIY skills? :D

Not with an allglass tank. larger allglass tanks have tempered bottoms to support the weight.

As for viewing from both sides. Advantage, it looks cool. Disadvantage, LR is hard to setup, ESPECIALLY with a thin tank, you have to scrape all sides with your algae scraper, and its harder to hide plumbing. I wouldn't do it with that tank. All-side viewing tanks are far more cuboidal than rectangular...

Upon further research, I may have spoken wrong about your tank size... All glass lists it at 13" wide... Not sure how that will affect your available area under the stand though. Could you measure the "usable" area, not including the wasted space by support braces?

Pro clear makes a wet/dry for a 55. Its nice and thin so it will fit under it. Just take the bioballs out and fill it with live rock. It should handle the overflow volume as its made specifically to deal with a 55.

Well, I'm gonna be building a custom stand for it, so technically I can make it as big as I like... or as big as it's worth building for a 55...

Thanks crazy, I'll check it out...

Oh nice. Well if you're building a custom stand, make it big enough to fit say a 29g or 30g :good:

yeah, thats a pretty good choice. Both the 29 and 30 tanks are 12" wide as well. The 29 is 30x12x20 which might be a little tall, but the 30 is 36x12x16 which if you can fit it, would be ideal :)
