Assuming, tentatively, that I could fit a large tank in my living room where would I buy a 5ft x 2ft x 2ft (1.52m x 0.6m x 0.6m); i.e. a 550 litre tank? Or something similar...?

try ND aquatics they are custom built tanks tha are much cheaper than the shelf bought fluval, juwel tanks etc and probably much better quality :good:

Ebay.

A mate of mine just got a Juwel Vision 260 (4 foot) off Ebay for £214 including stand, external filters, sand, spare tubes & masses of stuff. Sold by someone who went out spent a fortune then got bored with it all. Stuff only couple of month old.

as above - 2nd hand stuff is massively cheaper than new and often very close to new in terms of quality.

don't be put off by tanks that need a good clean of the glass. As long as there are no major scratches, a bit of elbow grease is all that's needed to to bring most of them back to life.

As above. 2nd hand is the way to go. I got a jewel Rio 400 which is 5 foot long and holds 450 litres of water with the stand, a fluval fx5 filter, sand, 2 300watt heaters, bogwood and some other stuff (and delivered) all for £200.

The only time I would get a new tank is if it was bigger than say 6 foot long. I'm getting my next tank from nd aquatics in August but that's only because it will be 8 ft x 2 x 2 and I don't think I can buy a tank of that size off the shelf

+1 to the ebay/classifieds listings. I've just cleaned a tank (literally last night) that I'd put down as second to use as it looked a real mess. It's come up cleaner than the first tank I was working on with not a scratch in sight.

Pictures will follow by the way, before anyone asks, I just forgot to take any last night as my daughter was crying after i got the substrate in.

I'm also waiting for a delivery from ND aquatics, slightly unusual shape of tank that I haven't seen 2nd hand anywhere, and my OH is an angel so she bought it for me.

Second hand all the way.
I got my 5ft (think its 450 litres or so), in a Classic Cabinet Company mahogony cabinet, three Fluval 304 filters, 4 large pieces of bog wood, nets & loads of other stuff for £280!! . Its an awesome tank & am very happy as its my pride & joy!!
So long as you patient & be ready to pounce as so to speak there are definately bargains to be had ... Happy hunting!!

That's a good deal, there's not a chance I could of turned down the offer I had. The fx5 filter it came with was only 3 months old and came with the receipt. He paid £205 for that on its own lol

I'm going to try and make a deal with the aquarist as I've got a jbl co2 kit for a 2nd hand ehiem 2217 external. I've never used the kit since owning my 2.5ft tank.
so hopefully he will swap as it'll save me loads of money and then I'll run my 2213 a fluval u1 and the 2217 in the new tank so I'll have no chance of any dead spots and I'll have high oxygen rate through the tank aswell.
