Please please please excuse my ignorance but I was having a random thought yesterday.
As it is coming up to Christmas (sorry to remind you all!) Wha pictures do Australian's have on their christmas cards?
It kinda confused me as it is summer at christmas.
Really sorry if anyone thinks I'm being silly but I was just curious. x

Aaaaaa, a X-mas tree and Santa I guess, not very different.

Yeah that's interesting, You really know its Christmas here when it's very cold and the snow comes!
Can't imagine having it on a hot day lol :)

I don't think it's any different to South Africa, where they're just starting to go into summer now....cards apparently are things like Santa on a surf board, Santa on the beach having a bbq etc.

lots of themes like koalas and kangaroos with santa hats on, but mostly just the traditional northern hemisphere things like snow covered cottages, mangers, christmas trees etc.

From memory, there's always a number of Australian themed cards on sale (usually in boxed sets) leading up to Christmas, depicting the country, bush (forest) or outback, Santa dressed down in thongs (or on a surfboard as previously suggested) and perhaps Reindeers substituted for Kangaroos. Quite novel and stereotypical, if anything.

However, despite Australians celebrating Christmas in summer, you'll find an overwhelming majority of our cards are reminiscent to those found elsewhere around the world; Mary & baby Jesus, Santa, Reindeers, snow, Christmas trees, wreaths, etc etc. According to the cards our family send out, the cards we receive and those I've seen sprawled in various families/friends/neighbours houses I visit during December/early Jan, I don't think it's much different :good:

I concur with that. Those chrissy decorations with kangaroos and emus and all that sort of stuff is great when you have kids around, but other than that we consider it rather cheesy so we stick with the tried, tested, and traditional.

lol aint santas sled pulled by big white boomers down under? thats a male kangaroo to the northern hemisphere mob.

Africa celebrates Kwanzaa.

I'm sure Australian's celebrate the birth of Jesus. As it is a Christian holiday.

As an Australian we celebrate exactly as Europeans and Americans celebrate except its 36'c outside. Some people still have xmas turkeys for dinner, my family has a barbeque and my wife family cooks curries.

We have the norm on our chrissy cards snow, Santa down the chimney, peace on earth etc.....

and yes we have some cheesy but cute cards with cartoon emus’, kangaroo's etc.

some of us even put fake snow on our windows and our Christmas tree's ..........mean while it is scorching hot out side

Christmas for me is a big family afair

the essentials are: back yard swimming pool, chricket bat and ball, big feast always end up eating too much .......every year we have to have prawns, turkey and mangoes YUMO

the Same as everyone else Christmas cards LOL, Always found it amusing most of the Christmas cards for sale around here have pictures of snow. Yah perfect Christmas, cold lunch with way to much food, swimming pool thats at 30 degrees from the heat but no one cares and plenty of family. A perfect christmas

I'm all for banning Christmas in December and having it in July. It's hotter then and better for kids on their new bikes. And, is'nt July supposed to be when Christ really was born?
We only have Christmas in December torid the druids of their festivel.
