I'd like a school of mid-level swimmers to add movement to my tank but run into that little issue of most nice looking schooling fish being bite-sized to my oscar, like my 20 columbian tetras :rip: I know silver dollars are a popular choice, but I'm not a particularly big fan of their coloration. I find silver fish (ie: tinfoil barbs, silver dollars, etc.) to be a bit boring. So, does anyone have any suggestions for an alternative schooling fish that is large enough to not be eaten, but has a more interesting color pattern than the silver?

Black widow tetra is a favorite of mine. But may be too small?

What about a group of headstanders? I have some Annostomus Ternetzi and they are great but I bet Marbled Headstanders would work great as well :)

the only issue with th above is finding adult or at least fish that are already of a reasonable size and how nmuch they will cost i know bosemani's round here are about £8 for a 1.5" fish

Hmmmm that is very expensive. Around here I would be quite confident of getting a shoal of 4 at about 4" for, say, £35-£40. And you don't need many rainbows at all to make even a large tank look full. I have 4 in my 5x2x2' and they really make the tank look small as they zoom around.

I have 4 apollo sharks in with one of my oscars, they reach up to 10", very active and have some nice red colouration coming up on their tail fins. Got them around 3" and not a chance they could be caught to be eaten, now about 4" within a few weeks. Not everyones cup of tea, but just an idea.
